In the film, the answer to “What is the one true religion?” is control—but that is Mr. Reed’s theory, not a definitive statement from the filmmakers about religion. The ending confirms that Reed has manipulated Paxton and Barnes, then leaves Paxton’s fate open to interpretation.
Why does Paxton say the answer is control?
In the cellar, Paxton follows the clues about the bike key and lock and realizes Reed has engineered the missionaries’ choices and guided them toward the place he wanted them to reach. She names his answer: control. Reed agrees, saying, “That’s exactly right. Religion is a system of control created by men.” The line confirms what Reed believes; it does not prove that the film endorses his claim as a universal truth. A24’s film page describes the story as two missionaries becoming ensnared in Mr. Reed’s deadly game.

Co-writer and co-director Bryan Woods described Reed’s conclusion as a hypothesis he has developed over a lifetime of investigating “what is the one true religion.” Woods also said Reed initially expected to test that hypothesis and send the missionaries away, but his encounter with Barnes changes the course of the night. Woods’s interview with Den of Geek makes clear that “control” belongs to Reed’s worldview.
Was Reed’s resurrection real?
No supernatural resurrection is established. Reed stages a demonstration and presents a woman as if she has returned from the dead, but Paxton recognizes that the woman is not the same person who died. The reveal exposes the performance as a switch, not a verified miracle. A24’s official synopsis frames Reed’s actions as part of a deadly game rather than confirming a supernatural event.

- Two young missionaries (Sophie Thatcher and Chloe East) are forced to prove their faith when they knock on the wrong door and are greeted by a diabolical Mr. Reed (Hugh Grant). Made to choose between belief and disbelief, they find themselves plunged into the darkest labyrinths of Reed’s mind and a deadly game of cat-and-mouse in this twisted horror from writer-directors Scott Beck and Bryan Woods (“A Quiet Place”)
Does Paxton survive the ending?
The film does not settle whether Paxton physically escapes or whether what follows is an image of death or an afterlife. The butterfly recalls Paxton’s earlier wish to return as a butterfly, and the bright setting echoes an earlier description of an afterlife. Those details can support more than one reading, but they are not proof of either survival or a supernatural experience.
Co-director Scott Beck told TheWrap that the filmmakers deliberately left room for multiple interpretations: “It’s not for us to define it, but there are the parameters that we’ve intentionally set up so that there can be an interpretation or two or three or four.” Beck’s interview with TheWrap supports reading the final images as an invitation to debate, not a puzzle with a single confirmed solution.
Rank #2
Is the film saying that religion is only about control?
No. The distinction is between Reed’s use of religion as a tool to manipulate people and the film’s broader questions about belief. Paxton’s faith and choices are not interchangeable with Reed’s coercion. The directors’ official A24 note on Heretic says the film grew from questions such as “why should you believe in God? Why shouldn’t you believe in God? And what the hell happens when you die?” It describes an exploration of religion, not a doctrinal verdict.
That distinction matters to the ending: Reed can be right that he has controlled the night without being right that all religion is control. His claim is the film’s provocation; its truth is left for viewers to consider.
