At the Met Gala, Styles made camp his own
On 6 May 2019, Styles co-chaired the Met Gala and arrived in a bespoke Gucci outfit that turned the evening’s camp theme into a memorable fashion statement: a sheer, frilled black blouse, tailored trousers and a pearl-drop earring. British Vogue’s report on the look captured its mix of delicacy and sharp tailoring.

Styles’s stylist, Harry Lambert, described the design to British Vogue as a meeting of traditionally feminine details—frills, sheer fabric and a pearl earring—with masculine styling, high-waisted tailored trousers and Styles’s tattoos. Lambert also cited New Romantic and Victorian references. That is Lambert’s interpretation of the outfit, not a statement from Styles.
Styles offered his own view of the theme in Vogue’s interview from the event: “I think it’s about enjoyment, and about fun.” He added, “I think fashion is supposed to be fun.” The look stood out not just for its details, but for how directly it embodied that playful idea.

Hosting and performing on Saturday Night Live
On 16 November, Styles took on two roles on Saturday Night Live: host and musical guest. He performed “Lights Up” and debuted “Watermelon Sugar,” bringing new solo material to the same episode in which he appeared in sketches. British Vogue’s episode coverage noted character roles and jokes that played on his One Direction past.
The double duty made the episode a particularly lively career moment. Styles was not only presenting his music; he was also leaning into comedy and his public persona, including the history that had followed him from his earlier group career.

Fine Line gave the year a musical finish
At the tail end of 2019, Styles released Fine Line, his second solo album. A 2020 Vogue retrospective on the album places its release at the end of that year. The album’s arrival connected naturally to the SNL performances, where Styles had already presented “Lights Up” and debuted “Watermelon Sugar.”

In December 2019, Styles spoke about clothing and gender in an interview with The Guardian, as quoted by British Vogue’s coverage: “What women wear. What men wear. For me it’s not a question of that.” He said that being told a shirt was for women would not make him want it less. The comments gave context to the Met Gala look without reducing it to a costume or suggesting that one outfit explained his entire approach to fashion.

British Vogue also reported that London pop-up shops ran through 19 December 2019 and offered limited-edition T-shirts and satin bomber jackets. That was a time-limited event in 2019, not evidence that those items are available now.
