In a written statement shared on Instagram after Payne’s death, Styles described his former One Direction bandmate as someone who “lived wide open, with his heart on his sleeve” and had an infectious energy for life. He also called Payne warm, supportive and “incredibly loving.”

Styles wrote that the years they spent together would “forever remain among the most cherished years of my life,” before closing: “I will miss him always, my lovely friend.” The Associated Press reproduced the statement in its report on 17 October 2024; the Associated Press report carries the full wording.
The Guardian also reported Styles’s reflection that Payne’s greatest joy was making other people happy, adding: “it was an honour to be alongside him as he did it.” The Guardian’s coverage reported both the individual tributes and the band’s response.

When and where did Liam Payne die?
Payne died in Buenos Aires, Argentina, on 16 October 2024, aged 31. The Associated Press reported at the time that he died after falling from a hotel balcony. That is contemporaneous reporting; it does not establish the current status or final outcome of any investigation.
How was Styles’s tribute different from One Direction’s joint statement?
Styles’s Instagram post was his personal tribute. Separately, the four surviving One Direction members—Styles, Zayn Malik, Louis Tomlinson and Niall Horan—issued a joint statement saying they were devastated and needed time to grieve and process the loss of their “brother.” They said their memories with Payne would be treasured forever.
The distinction matters: the line “I will miss him always, my lovely friend” comes from Styles’s individual post, not the group statement. The Associated Press reproduced both statements in its 17 October 2024 report.

Styles and Payne had shared years as members of One Direction, the group formed in 2010 after all five members auditioned individually for The X Factor and Simon Cowell brought them together. The Guardian reported that the band had four chart-topping albums.
