For a first watch, see the eight Harry Potter films in release order, followed by the three released Fantastic Beasts prequels. For in-universe chronology, watch the Fantastic Beasts films first, then the eight Harry Potter films. This guide covers all 11 released Wizarding World movies; the original Harry Potter eight-film series keeps the same order either way.
How many Harry Potter movies are there?
There are eight films in the Harry Potter series and three released films in the Fantastic Beasts prequel series, for 11 movies in this guide. The official Harry Potter films page groups them into those two collections. Harry Potter and the Cursed Child is a stage production, not a movie, so it is not part of either watch list.
Harry Potter movies in order of release date
For a first-time viewer, release order is the clearest choice: it follows the sequence in which audiences encountered the films and their expanding story world. TheWrap also recommends release order as the more sensible starting point, while treating chronology as a possible rewatch approach.
- Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone (2001)
- Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets (2002)
- Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban (2004)
- Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (2005)
- Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix (2007)
- Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince (2009)
- Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1 (2010)
- Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 (2011)
- Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them (2016)
- Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald (2018)
- Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore (2022)
The title Sorcerer’s Stone is used here as named on the franchise page. The film is known by a different title in some regions.

Harry Potter movies in chronological order
For the story timeline, begin with the prequels, which are set about 70 years before Sorcerer’s Stone, then continue through the Potter films in their familiar sequence. The chronology guide identifies the first two Fantastic Beasts stories as set in 1926 and 1927; it does not establish an exact year for The Secrets of Dumbledore.
- Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them (2016 release; story set in 1926)
- Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald (2018 release; story set in 1927)
- Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore (2022 release)
- Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone (2001)
- Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets (2002)
- Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban (2004)
- Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (2005)
- Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix (2007)
- Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince (2009)
- Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1 (2010)
- Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 (2011)
Which watch order should you choose?
| What you want | Suggested order | Why |
|---|---|---|
| First time watching all 11 movies | Release order | It preserves the films’ audience-release sequence and introduces the prequels after the original series. |
| Rewatching by story timeline | Chronological order | It places the earlier-set Fantastic Beasts stories before the Potter-era films. |
| Only watching the eight Harry Potter films | Either list’s Potter sequence | The eight films appear in the same order by release and story sequence; the difference only matters when adding the prequels. |
Neither approach is a rule. TheWrap’s editorial recommendation favors release order overall; chronology is a reasonable option for viewers who already know the films and want to follow the setting’s timeline.

Where to watch the films
Streaming catalogs vary by country and change over time, so a service that carries a film in one territory may not carry it elsewhere or later. The official film guide points viewers to regional viewing options; check the current catalog of providers available where you live, especially if you want all 11 films from one service. Physical collections are another option, but confirm the edition, format, and included titles before buying.
