In a January 19, 2024, interview with io9’s Sabina Graves, Medrano also described building its version of Hell from afterlife lore, circus imagery, and the neon grit of New York and Las Vegas. Her account makes clear that the series is a personal creative collage, not an adaptation of one canonical religious text.
Adult comedy and musical theater shaped the show’s format
Medrano traces part of her interest in adult animation to seeing South Park at a very young age. In Graves’s interview, she recalled that the experience “changed the entire trajectory of my career.” She said making an adult animated comedy was already an ambition, and that her love of musical theater led her to bring musical storytelling together with raunchy comedy and fluid animation.
That combination is central to how Medrano describes Hazbin Hotel: comedy and songs are not separate inspirations but parts of the same creative vision. The series is an adult animated musical comedy, as the interview’s premise summary also identifies it.
Hell is a theatrical collage, not a single-text adaptation
Medrano said she is drawn to mythos and to adaptations of mythos, and sees Hell as a setting with many representations across texts and religions. Rather than identifying one source as the show’s blueprint, she described combining familiar ideas with an intentionally theatrical visual concept.
#1 Best Overall
A circus led by Lucifer
“I wanted to make my hell kind like a big circus,” Medrano told Graves. She pictured Lucifer as a ringleader and said the sins were based on circus acts. The imagery gives the underworld a show-business quality while remaining Medrano’s own design choice, not a claim about any one religious tradition.
A neon city with New York and Las Vegas edges
Medrano described the main city as a mix of New York and Las Vegas, drawing specifically on their sleazier sides and adding neon. That urban setting sits alongside the circus concept: the show’s Hell is both a theatrical spectacle and a rough, brightly lit city.
Charlie’s optimism grew with the redemption story
The interview describes Charlie Morningstar as Hell’s princess, who opens a hotel in hopes of rehabilitating demons and peacefully addressing overpopulation. In the story’s premise, Heaven sends angels to exterminate demons annually. Medrano said Charlie was different in an early version; when she developed the redemption side of the story, she wanted the character to have the determined optimism of Leslie Knope from Parks and Recreation.
Medrano explained that this choice influenced Charlie’s design, personality, and performance. She wanted someone who would persist in the face of adversity, with the spirit of “No, I’m determined.” The comparison is about Charlie’s hopeful resolve, rather than a claim that the characters or shows share the same story.
The childhood favorites Medrano remembers
Asked about early pop-culture loves, Medrano named animated series and films that she remembered as formative favorites:
- The Grim Adventures of Billy & Mandy
- Invader Zim
- Looney Tunes
- Jurassic Park
- Who Framed Roger Rabbit
- Disney Renaissance musical films
She did not connect each title to a specific character or scene in Hazbin Hotel. The list is best understood as a record of the works she recalls loving, alongside the more direct influences she discussed: adult comedy, musical theater, and a playful approach to mythic material.
