He was already active in politics, however: after several unsuccessful campaigns as an independent, he won the Burlington mayoral election in 1981.
Education and move to Vermont
Sanders was born in Brooklyn, New York, on September 8, 1941. He graduated from James Madison High School and earned a bachelor of science degree from the University of Chicago in 1964, according to the U.S. House History, Art & Archives biography.
After college, he moved to Vermont. That move preceded the working life and political activity that eventually brought him to Burlington City Hall.
His work before elected office
Official biographies identify Sanders as having worked as a carpenter and journalist. The House biography also records that he directed the American People’s Historical Society. The available biographies do not provide dates for each position or establish a complete sequence, so it is not possible to say precisely when he held each job.

Sanders also held lecture appointments at Harvard’s John F. Kennedy School of Government and Hamilton College before his 1990 election to Congress, according to his U.S. Senate biography.
Political activity before his first elected office
“Before politics” is not quite the right dividing line: Sanders was politically active well before he became mayor. In a 2015 National Press Club speech, he described beginning his political career in 1971 as a Liberty Union candidate for the U.S. Senate.

The House biography lists a series of unsuccessful independent campaigns before his first victory: U.S. Senate in 1972 and 1974; Vermont governor in 1972, 1976 and 1986; and the U.S. House in 1988. These campaigns mark a long stretch of political organizing before he held elected office.
How Sanders won Burlington’s mayoralty
Sanders won Burlington’s mayoral election in 1981 and served as mayor from 1981 to 1989. In his 2015 National Press Club remarks, he recalled challenging a five-term incumbent with a coalition that included workers, union members, environmentalists, neighborhood activists, low-income organizations, women’s groups and college students.

Sanders recalled that the campaign cost “about $4,000.” He said the recount left him with a 10-vote margin; in his remarks, he recalled an initial 14-vote margin before the recount. Those figures are his retrospective account in 2015, not a separate verification of campaign spending or the election count.

The mayoralty was Sanders’s first elected office. He entered the U.S. House in 1991 and the Senate in 2007, according to the House and Senate biographies. The distinction matters: his years before office included paid work and college lecturing, but also repeated campaigns and political organizing.
