Hannah Einbinder won the 2025 Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series for playing Ava Daniels on Hacks. At the end of her acceptance speech, she cheered the Philadelphia Eagles, criticized ICE and voiced support for Palestine. Her fuller explanation came backstage, where she spoke about her Jewish identity and friends working in northern Gaza.
What did Hannah Einbinder say at the 2025 Emmys?
Einbinder ended her acceptance speech with the line, “Go birds, fuck Ice and free Palestine,” according to The Guardian’s contemporaneous report. “Go birds” is a reference to the Philadelphia Eagles. The brief closing line brought together a sports cheer, criticism of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), and a call to free Palestine.
The 77th Emmy Awards took place at the Peacock Theater in downtown Los Angeles on September 14, 2025, and aired live on CBS. The Television Academy records Einbinder as the winner in the supporting actress comedy category for Hacks, in which she plays Ava Daniels. The ceremony recognized television achievement in the 2024–2025 season. The Academy’s event and winner information is the primary record for those details.
How did she explain her remarks backstage?
After the ceremony, Einbinder described the issue as personal and said she felt a responsibility to distinguish Jewish identity from the state of Israel. The Guardian quoted her saying: “I feel like it is my obligation as a Jewish person to distinguish Jews from the state of Israel because our religion and our culture is such an important and longstanding … institution that is really separate to the ethno-nationalist state.”

She also explained why events in Gaza mattered to her. “I have friends in Gaza who are working as frontline workers, as doctors, right now in the north of Gaza, to provide care for pregnant women, and [working] for schoolchildren to create schools in the refugee camps,” she said, as reported by The Guardian. This is Einbinder’s account of her friends’ work; the reporting does not independently identify or verify those individuals.
What were the pin and boycott comments about?
The Guardian reported that Einbinder wore an Artists4Ceasefire pin. The campaign’s appeal, as described in the report, urged the U.S. government to call for immediate de-escalation and a ceasefire in Gaza and Israel. The pin was visual context at the ceremony, not part of her spoken remarks.

Einbinder also discussed the Film Workers for Palestine pledge. She characterized its boycott as directed at institutions she viewed as directly complicit in the conduct she opposed, rather than at individual artists. TheWrap’s contemporary account also reported her clarification. This describes Einbinder’s position, not an independent assessment of the pledge’s signatories or targets.

The stage line was brief: it named ICE and Palestine alongside an Eagles cheer. Backstage, Einbinder supplied her reasoning, discussing Jewish religion and culture as distinct from the state of Israel and describing friends’ work in northern Gaza. Keeping those two settings separate makes clear what she said publicly during the acceptance speech and what she explained afterward.

For the exact profanity in the closing line, The Guardian’s contemporaneous account preserves the wording. CNN’s rush transcript renders that part incompletely, so its punctuation should not be treated as a definitive verbatim record.
