Without Brian Wilson, popular music would be missing one of its most distinctive voices: a songwriter, arranger and producer who helped turn the Beach Boys’ bright California sound toward something more inward and emotionally revealing. We cannot prove what music would have become in an alternate history. But Pet Sounds—and especially “God Only Knows”—makes the question feel worth asking.
From Hawthorne to a defining pop group
The Beach Boys formed in Hawthorne, California, in 1961. The original lineup brought together brothers Brian, Carl and Dennis Wilson, their cousin Mike Love, and school friend Al Jardine. The group became known for songs associated with surf, cars and youthful fun; Brian’s later work helped broaden that public image into more introspective territory.
The band’s official About page reports more than 100 million records sold worldwide and 36 songs reaching the US Top 40. Those are figures reported by the band, not independently audited totals; the page does not date them. It also says artists across genres have cited Pet Sounds as an inspiration, without quantifying the extent of that influence.
Pet Sounds changed the frame
Released on May 16, 1966, Pet Sounds was produced and primarily composed by Brian Wilson. It includes “God Only Knows,” the song whose title gives this tribute its central question. Rather than treating the album as a simple break from the band’s earlier sound, it is more useful to hear it as a widening of what a Beach Boys song could express: pop craftsmanship made room for tenderness and uncertainty.

In a 2025 Rolling Stone tribute, Wilson recalled: “I wrote some songs that were about how I felt in my thirties, the same way that Pet Sounds was about how I felt in my twenties.” That recollection offers a personal lens on the album, not a complete explanation of his psychology. The contrast between the band’s sunny public image and the vulnerability heard in some of Wilson’s writing is part of what makes the work resonate.
Why “God Only Knows” carries this question
The title phrase turns a lyric of dependence into a public expression of gratitude. In this context, “God only knows what we’d be without Brian Wilson” is not a claim that one person single-handedly determined pop history. It is an imaginative way to ask what listeners might have missed: the songs, arrangements and emotional register Wilson helped bring into the Beach Boys’ music.

The song also belongs to a group effort. Tony Asher, who collaborated with Wilson on the album’s lyrics, recalled the concern around using the word “God” in the lyric: “We did have this concern about using the word ‘God’ in the lyric at that time. It was a relatively controversial thing. And I think we would have given it up if we could have come up with absolutely anything else that would have satisfied us.” The recollection appears in the band’s official retrospective on the album’s 60th anniversary.
In that same retrospective, Mike Love praised Carl Wilson’s lead vocal, describing it as “the most beautiful lead you could possibly imagine,” and called the song “a beautiful track by Brian.” The distinction matters: Brian’s writing and production are central to the track, while Carl’s performance is an essential part of the recording’s identity.

What remains—and how to explore it
Brian Wilson died on June 11, 2025, shortly before his 83rd birthday, according to the Beach Boys’ official 2025 retrospective. The music offers a way to encounter his contribution without reducing it to a counterfactual or a single song.
- Start with Pet Sounds. It is the 1966 album at the heart of this story, and it includes “God Only Knows.”
- Listen for the collaborators. Asher’s lyric work and Carl Wilson’s lead vocal help show how the song’s effect emerged from more than one role.
- Explore the recording process. The official UK store listing for The Pet Sounds Sessions Highlights 2CD describes vocal-only tracks, alternate versions and tracking-session highlights, including “God Only Knows.” It lists a May 15, 2026 release date. This is a UK retail listing; it does not establish stock in other countries. Check the official UK product page for current availability.
For a longer account of the band and its cultural setting, David Leaf’s revised God Only Knows: The Story of Brian Wilson, the Beach Boys and the California Myth is a relevant further read. Leaf’s site says the book first appeared in 1978 as The Beach Boys and the California Myth and describes the later edition as substantially expanded. The author’s book page and the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Museum Store listing provide edition information; check the retailer for current availability.
