Gulmohar begins with a family preparing to leave the Delhi house it has called home for 34 years. The move brings the Batras together for one last gathering, but private tensions and secrets make departure more complicated than packing up a residence.
What is Gulmohar about?
The Batra family’s long-time home, named Gulmohar, is set to be redeveloped. As the family gathers for a final party before moving, matriarch Kusum makes an announcement that unsettles the occasion. Packing then brings other secrets into view, putting pressure on relationships across generations.

The story follows Kusum, her son Arun, Arun’s wife Indu and their son Aditya as they face what has been said—and what remains unrevealed. The move is the catalyst, but the preview’s central tension is how the family’s bonds change when the place that has held their shared history is about to disappear. Scroll’s preview introduces the gathering and the secrets without revealing how they are resolved.
How does the film approach family and home?
Director Rahul V. Chittella described the film as dealing with “meaning of family and home across three generations” at a press conference in Goa on 25 November 2023, during the 54th International Film Festival of India. That framing makes the Batras’ move more than a change of address: it asks what makes a family feel rooted when a familiar place is gone.

Chittella also said, “The film is set in Delhi and Delhi is like a character in the film.” In the same official release, he connected the title to the gulmohar flower: “The title Gulmohar is a poetic word and it reminds me of the very intriguing songs by Gulzar. Gulmohar is a flower that blooms and falls very quickly and its image suits the story that I am trying to tell.” The film was featured in the Indian Panorama category at the 54th IFFI. The Press Information Bureau’s release records the director’s remarks.
