The persona debuted in the WWF around summer 1988, parodying televangelist television and eventually intersecting with major names including The Undertaker. Here are ten details that explain how the character came together and what he did on screen.
1. Bruce Prichard created Brother Love—and played him
Brother Love wasn’t simply a role Bruce Prichard was hired to perform. In a 2016 interview with Wrestling Inc., Prichard recalled pitching the idea to Vince McMahon. McMahon initially told him to find someone else for the part. Prichard argued he could do it, demonstrated the character in McMahon’s office, and then performed it for the camera in the studio.
That origin makes the persona a piece of Prichard’s own creative work as well as an on-screen performance. He later became known as a WWF/WWE producer and executive, but Brother Love was one of the characters he personally brought to life.
2. The character took shape in summer 1988
Prichard placed Brother Love’s creation about a year after he began working for the WWF in 1987, saying it took shape “around the summer of ’88.” A 2013 Wrestling Inc. report describes the debut as June 1988. The safest shared description is summer 1988; the interview accounts do not establish a precise broadcast date.

3. Robert Tilton was Prichard’s principal inspiration
Prichard has described televangelist television as the starting point. In a 2023 interview with The Press Box, he recalled being fascinated by evangelical TV personalities in Texas and Oklahoma while regarding many of them as insincere. Asked about a specific influence, he named Dallas-based televangelist Robert Tilton as the biggest one.
Prichard said he wanted Brother Love to embody traits he disliked. That makes the character a parody of a broader televangelist style, not evidence that he was intended as a one-to-one impersonation of Tilton.

4. The act was designed to irritate the audience
Brother Love’s exaggerated warmth was part of the provocation. Prichard agreed in the Press Box interview that the character was meant to be annoying, and described the booing he received from live audiences as “glorious.” The smiling delivery and insistent professions of love made the persona’s apparent sincerity feel like part of the performance rather than a reason to trust him.
5. A real televangelism scandal made the character feel timely
Prichard recalled that the Jim Bakker–Jessica Hahn scandal broke shortly after the first Brother Love TV set. In his account, that timing gave the character added topicality; it did not create the idea, which he says was already in motion. This is Prichard’s retrospective explanation of the moment, rather than independent evidence about how viewers responded.

6. The early appearances included familiar WWF names
Prichard recalled several elements of Brother Love’s initial run of TV appearances: an introduction with Bobby Heenan, Ted DiBiase acting as his benefactor, and an introduction with Big Boss Man. Those details come from Prichard’s account in the 2013 Wrestling Inc. interview, and offer a glimpse of how the new character was introduced into an established WWF television world.
7. The Brother Love Show was a recurring interview segment
Brother Love wasn’t limited to entrances and ringside appearances. Online World of Wrestling describes him as the host of a weekly interview segment. WWE’s video archive preserves a dated example: on WWE Superstars on May 27, 1989, he interviewed Zeus about being “the true star of No Holds Barred.” Watch the Zeus segment in WWE’s archive.

8. Prichard recalled that Andre the Giant and Hulk Hogan had reservations
Prichard said Andre the Giant liked him but disliked Brother Love and did not want to appear on the show. Prichard recalled Vince McMahon arranging a meeting, explaining that the appearance was good business, and Andre agreeing—though, according to Prichard, he still hated the character.
Prichard also said Hulk Hogan was away when Brother Love debuted and initially worried someone might pull a gun on the character. He recalled Hogan later thinking their work together was good. These are Prichard’s accounts of private reactions, not independently verified statements from Andre or Hogan.
