She does not know whether the finished look works until she is fully inside it. The uncertainty came before her October 31, 2024 reveal: Klum and her husband, Tom Kaulitz, appeared as E.T. at her annual New York City Halloween party.
Why Klum said the costume process makes her anxious
In an interview with PEOPLE at the October 29, 2024 opening of Crazy Pizza in New York City, Klum described the uncertainty behind her costume reveals. “I always get anxious,” she said, explaining: “Because there is no real trial. like, I can’t do a real fitting before I am in it. Because I never know if it works until the day [of].”
Her use of “anxious” referred to anticipation about whether a complex costume would come together as intended. The interview does not establish a clinical anxiety condition.
What Klum and Tom Kaulitz wore on Halloween
On October 31, 2024, Klum and Kaulitz revealed matching E.T. costumes at Klum’s 23rd annual Halloween party in New York City. Klum’s version drew on the moment in the 1982 film when E.T. is disguised by Elliott’s younger sister, Gertie. The Associated Press described Klum’s build as featuring a long neck, animatronic eyes, a blonde wig, a round hat and a light-up index finger.

How the E.T. costume was developed
Vogue’s account says a small E.T. figurine sparked the idea, and Klum began brainstorming after the previous Halloween. The custom look involved 30 FX artists, and Klum and Kaulitz each spent seven hours getting into costume. Those reported figures help explain why the reveal was not something Klum could realistically test through an ordinary fitting beforehand.
The headpiece was one challenge. “Balancing the headpiece was one of the biggest challenges,” Klum told Vogue. “It had to be secure without being too heavy, as I wore it for hours.” She also described the overall process this way: “The process drives me a little crazy! But I love it.”

A previous costume shows the practical stakes
Klum’s past costumes have posed logistical problems beyond whether they look right. In a syndicated PEOPLE interview, she recalled that an oversized apple costume in 2006 was too large for ordinary car doors, so she needed a convertible to get to the party. The same account says her children have helped make costume elements, including wigs and accessories, and that they used masks while sanding.
The apple story is an example of the practical complications a large costume can create; it does not indicate that the 2024 E.T. build had the same transportation issue. The earlier anecdote and family details were reported by Yahoo’s syndicated PEOPLE interview.
