In a report published on 14 January 2024, PerthNow said former Married at First Sight participant Hayley Vernon criticized Woolworths’ decision not to stock Australia Day merchandise in an Instagram Story. The report placed her comments amid calls to change the 26 January date and expected protests, but it does not establish her current views or whether the original Story is still available.
What prompted Vernon’s comments?
PerthNow reported that Woolworths would not stock Australia Day merchandise and attributed the decision to declining demand. Vernon framed it as a boycott in her Story, asking, “Why is Woolworths boycotting Australia Day? Thank god I don’t shop with them anyway,” as quoted by PerthNow’s 14 January 2024 report. “Boycotting” was Vernon’s characterization; the retailer’s explanation, as reported, was declining demand.
She also questioned the expectation that people should apologize for historical wrongs, asking, “Now, I know to some, this is going to be controversial but at what point do we stop having to apologise for the wrongdoings of people many generations before us?” PerthNow attributed both quotations to an Instagram Story; the original post was not independently available.
What else did she discuss?
According to the report, Vernon recounted a discussion in her apartment building’s group chat: after someone suggested an Australia Day barbecue, another resident apologized. She also objected to childcare centres using “happy holidays” and complained about changes to confectionery names.

PerthNow identified the sweets formerly called Redskins and Chicos as Red Ripper and Cheekies. Vernon’s reported reaction was: “When I went to get tattooed on Monday I went to buy lollies, there’s no redskins anymore, or Chico babies, I can’t actually remember what they have renamed them but ffs stop with all of this.” These were examples in her argument, not a neutral assessment of the reasons for the changes.
Why was the date being debated?
PerthNow situated the remarks amid calls to change Australia Day’s date and anticipated protests following the 2023 Voice referendum. The date is 26 January. So Dramatic!’s search-result text notes that some Indigenous people call it Invasion Day because it represents British occupation of Aboriginal land. That description is context, not a complete account of the history or a statement of every Indigenous person’s view. The available reporting does not establish what protests ultimately occurred or what the current debate looks like.
