Harris and Gambon played the older Hogwarts headmaster in the original Harry Potter saga; Law played a younger Dumbledore in the Fantastic Beasts films. That difference in age and story phase matters: the ranking is a judgment about how each performance fits its films, not an objective consensus or a comparison based on equal screen time.
How this ranking judges the performances
I weigh three things: how well each actor fits Dumbledore’s age and place in the story, the balance of warmth, wit, and authority in the performance, and how effectively the portrayal serves the films’ dramatic moments. These are critical criteria, not a formal scoring system. The roles also differ: Harris and Gambon portray the seasoned headmaster, while Law’s Dumbledore belongs to an earlier chapter of the character’s life.
1. Richard Harris: the most immediately reassuring Dumbledore
Richard Harris played Dumbledore in Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone and Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, according to Wizarding World’s account of the casting history. His placement at the top reflects how naturally his presence suits the early films’ sense of wonder. He gives the headmaster an unmistakable air of age and authority, but his measured manner also makes him feel approachable to Harry.
Harris’s Dumbledore is a steady centre in stories that introduce a hidden magical world. His gentleness and composure make the character’s power feel secure rather than threatening, a useful contrast to the dangers Harry is only beginning to understand. This is a quieter interpretation than the one that follows, but for the first two films’ fairy-tale register, that restraint is a strength.

2. Michael Gambon: a forceful fit for a darker saga
Michael Gambon took over as Dumbledore beginning with Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban and played him through Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2. The Associated Press reported that Gambon appeared in six of the eight original Harry Potter films; that count describes his tenure, not his quality (Associated Press, September 28, 2023).
Gambon’s more commanding presence fits the later films as the conflict grows and Dumbledore’s role becomes more consequential. He can make the headmaster feel formidable, and that intensity gives the character dramatic weight when the story turns toward war and sacrifice. I rank him just behind Harris because this authority can make Dumbledore seem less warmly reassuring; the trade-off is also what makes Gambon’s version effective in the saga’s more severe phase.

3. Jude Law: a younger Dumbledore with a different dramatic task
Jude Law plays a younger Dumbledore in the Fantastic Beasts films. Wizarding World’s casting announcement confirms him for the next film in that series. Rather than recreate the elderly schoolmaster, Law has to suggest the person Dumbledore was before Harry knew him: a figure with history still unfolding and a different relationship to power and responsibility.
That distinction makes Law’s portrayal interesting, but it also makes it less directly comparable with the two performances set at Hogwarts. In my ranking, his younger, more reserved interpretation has less of the instantly recognizable warmth and reassuring gravity that define the older Dumbledore for many viewers. Third place is not a claim that Law fails at his part; it reflects the different character phase and dramatic function the prequels give him.

Who has played Dumbledore on screen?
This is a ranking of three actors associated with the feature-film portrayals discussed above, not a claim that they are the only screen actors to play the character. Warner Bros. Discovery announced John Lithgow as Dumbledore in the separate HBO Original Harry Potter series. That television adaptation is outside this feature-film ranking.
No sourced poll, audience ranking, or performance score establishes an objective winner here. The order is my judgment, based on how each portrayal serves its own films and version of the character.
