Why Harrison Ford missed the 2025 Oscars
ABC News reported that Ford received the diagnosis on February 28, two days before the ceremony. A representative for Ford confirmed his withdrawal on March 1, according to ABC News, which also reported that he was resting and recovering at home. No further details about his symptoms, treatment or prognosis were reported.

The Academy listed Ford among the presenters for the 97th Oscars in an announcement dated February 26, 2025. The ceremony took place at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles on March 2 and aired on ABC, with streaming on Hulu announced by the Academy. Read the Academy’s presenter announcement.
What shingles is—and what is not known about Ford’s case
The CDC explains that shingles occurs when varicella-zoster virus, the virus that causes chickenpox, reactivates in the body. It causes a painful rash; postherpetic neuralgia, or long-term nerve pain, is the most common complication. These are general facts about shingles, not details about Ford’s individual case. CDC guidance on shingles prevention
The CDC recommends the two-dose Shingrix vaccine series for adults 50 and older, as well as adults 19 and older with weakened immune systems due to disease or therapy. A doctor or pharmacist can administer it. The CDC says people who think they have shingles should contact a health care provider promptly to discuss treatment; vaccination guidance is not treatment advice for an active case. In its shingles overview, the CDC says: “The best way to protect yourself from shingles is vaccination.”
