In a memoir excerpt, Gulzar recalls a close, affectionate bond with his daughter Meghna—whom he called Bosky—and describes trying to give her room to grow into her own choices. The “piece of sun” line comes from a poem he says he wrote when she was sixteen and angry with him: a moment of conflict that, in his telling, made her feelings seem inseparable from his own.
Where the story comes from
The passage is an excerpt from Dhoop Aane Do – Pages Plucked From Memories, translated from Marathi by Ambarish Mishra and published by Amaryllis. Scroll.in published the excerpt on November 21, 2024. It is a translated anthology passage, not a separate interview; the personal memories and reflections below are Gulzar’s account in that text. Read the excerpt at Scroll.in.
Why Gulzar called Meghna “Bosky”
Gulzar recalls calling his newborn daughter Bosky. When the family discussed a formal name, he says Raakhee suggested Meghna, inspired by a river in her native town in Bengal. The passage thus uses Bosky as an affectionate family name and Meghna as the name Raakhee proposed.
Domestic memories, not celebrity spectacle
Gulzar’s recollections dwell on ordinary care: watching Meghna take her first steps, learning to wrap a newborn, changing nappies, helping with schoolwork and attempting to braid her hair. These details give the excerpt its intimate scale. He remembers a father learning practical tasks alongside the child’s growth, rather than presenting their relationship through public milestones.

Making room for Meghna’s choices
Gulzar says he and Raakhee did not expect Meghna to be a topper. He recalls giving her space to pursue sports, take part in school plays and set her own goals. He says he did not impose his preferences when she chose a college farther from home.
That recollection leads to a broader parental principle: “It is pointless to cast your child in your mould.” In the excerpt, Gulzar argues that a doctor’s child need not become a doctor, and warns against hovering over children like a “noisy helicopter.” His point is not that parents should stop caring, but that care should leave a child room to encounter the world on their own terms.

The birthday books and what they taught him
Gulzar says he made a poetry book for Meghna’s birthday each year for thirteen years. He recalls that writing for her as she grew helped him notice how a child’s language changes with age. This is his own description of the experience, rather than a general claim about children’s development.
The “piece of sun” poem: a teenage disagreement
The poem follows Gulzar’s description of Bosky as a sixteen-year-old rebel. He presents writing as a possible way to reach her when a toy could not. The poem’s opening image is: “Bosky, a piece of sun, / Mingles in my blood, day and night;” In the context he gives, the line expresses how deeply her anger affected him during that disagreement; it is not detached from the episode as a generic declaration about fatherhood.

A separate reflection in Because He Is
A different text offers related context: an Indian Express excerpt published in 2018 reproduces a note by Gulzar in Meghna Gulzar’s book Because He Is, published by HarperCollins India. That note reflects on children observing their parents, including the line, “They know our hypocrisies…” It is a separate piece from the 2024 anthology excerpt and should not be mistaken for the source of the poem or its story.
