Gurvinder Singh’s 2022 Punjabi-language feature Adh Chanani Raat, also known as Crescent Night, follows Modan as he returns home after 15 years in prison for a murder committed to avenge his father’s humiliation. The film turns on a painful question: can he build an ordinary life and find belonging while the anger that drove his revenge remains close at hand?
What is Adh Chanani Raat about?
Modan comes home after serving 15 years for murder. He wants to leave the past behind and recover a place among family and community, but pent-up anger and the impulse to answer insult with violence threaten that hope. The film’s conflict is not simply whether he will be provoked again; it is whether the tenderness and longing Singh sees in Modan can coexist with the capacity for revenge.
The Cinémathèque québécoise lists the Punjabi-language feature at 109 minutes and credits Jatinder Mauhar, S.S. Dhiman, Veera Gill and Samuel John among its performers. Its film listing describes Modan’s attempt to move on and the renewed violence that follows.
Why did Singh return to Gurdial Singh’s novel?
Singh said the project brought him back to the writing of Gurdial Singh, whose novel Adh Chanani Raat was published in 1976. He is careful about how to describe the film’s relationship to the book: “Also, this is strictly not an adaptation. It is a reworking of the novel.” He notes that the novel and film take different trajectories, so viewers should not expect a scene-by-scene transfer from page to screen. In his February 3, 2022 interview with Scroll.in, Singh discusses what drew him back to the novel.

How does Singh understand Modan?
Singh describes Modan as an enigma: tender and yearning for the warmth of home, love and an ordinary life, yet capable of killing for revenge, whether impulsively or deliberately. Modan feels like a misfit in society and family and is sensitive to injustice. Singh’s reading makes his return home more than a physical homecoming: Modan tries to earn the closeness he wants, ignores provocations, and then, in a momentary loss of judgment, risks throwing that hard-won possibility away.
That movement gives the film its cycle of darkness, brightness and darkness again. Singh connects the story to disputes over land, honour and name, and to social divisions that, in his view, persist despite technological progress. His reflections on Punjab’s partition and borders are his perspective as a filmmaker, not a neutral historical account.

How did Singh approach casting and the film’s night scenes?
Choosing Jatinder Mauhar as Modan
Singh chose Jatinder Mauhar after watching his films and meeting him. He valued Mauhar’s expressive face and personality, and felt he could carry both Modan’s gentleness and toughness. Mauhar had not acted before, though he knew film and was interested in appearing in front of the camera. Singh describes his casting as intuitive and says he considers both professional and non-professional performers.
Lighting darkness rather than relying on it
Singh praised cinematographer Satya Rai Nagpaul’s work and described a visual approach built around planned lighting rather than familiar, high-contrast night imagery. Open fields made exterior night scenes especially difficult. At times the crew spent the night lighting a scene, then filmed during the brief period before daybreak. For the murder shot, Singh imagined an extreme long shot: distant figures beside a solitary tree.

Where was the film shown?
The film premiered at the International Film Festival of Rotterdam, according to the February 3, 2022 Scroll.in interview. The Cinémathèque québécoise records a screening on May 4, 2023, at the South Asian Film Festival of Montreal. These are documented festival appearances; neither record establishes where the film is currently available to stream, rent or buy.

The International Film Festival of Rotterdam’s profile for Singh lists Adh chanani raat / Crescent Night (2022) in his filmography. The profile also notes his directing studies at the Film and Television Institute of India, his work with filmmaker Mani Kaul, and the Cannes Un Certain Regard screening of The Fourth Direction (2015). His earlier films listed there include Alms for the Blind Horse (2011) and Bitter Chestnut (2019). The IFFR profile provides the career context.
