David Bromstad has said that substance use and the strain of renovating his storm-damaged Florida home were part of a difficult period in his life. The house was not completely destroyed: reports describe major water damage, flooding and mold that led to work down to the studs. His story is featured in HGTV’s My Lottery Dream Home: David’s Happy Ending.
What happened to David Bromstad’s house?
Bromstad’s Winter Park, Florida home suffered storm and water damage, including flooding and mold. The repairs became an extensive renovation: TV Insider described a four-year project, while Realtor.com reported that damage and possible mold meant the home had to be taken back to the studs. That is a major renovation, not evidence that the house was completely destroyed. Realtor.com’s December 19, 2025 report and TV Insider’s December 17, 2025 interview describe the storm damage and the toll of the work.
Bromstad connected the renovation with emotional, financial, physical and psychological pressure, including the difficulty of dealing with insurance claims. He summed up the parallel between the house and his own state of mind in a reflection quoted by HGTV: “When it was down to the studs,” he said, “so was I.”
What did Bromstad say about substance use?
In his TV Insider interview, Bromstad described the experience as a healing journey and spoke about substance use and self-criticism. He said: “Through substance abuse and not being kind to myself, the one thing that’s always remained secure and steady has been my creative talent.” He also said, “In all honesty, this journey has been so healing.” These are his personal statements; the cited coverage does not name a specific substance or establish his present recovery status.

The network’s program page describes the renovation of Bromstad’s 4,000-square-foot Winter Park home and quotes his reflection on being “down to the studs.” HGTV listed the special’s premiere for December 19, 2025 at 9|8c and named discovery+ as a streaming destination when it published the listing.
