Heated Rivalry is a six-episode romantic drama about rival hockey players Shane Hollander and Ilya Rozanov, whose on-ice competition gives way to a private relationship. Its appeal, as Michael Block argues in his review, lies in the gradual character development—and in how a second romance helps deepen the central couple’s story. Calling it “perfect from start to finish” is a matter of taste, but the series gives that claim a clear case to make.
What is Heated Rivalry about?
Created by Jacob Tierney, the series adapts Rachel Reid’s Game Changers books. Shane Hollander and Ilya Rozanov are professional hockey rivals whose public competition sits alongside a private romance. The contrast between their sporting rivalry and growing intimacy supplies the central tension. Bell Media’s Crave series page identifies it as a Crave original adapted from Reid’s books.
The adaptation gives viewers a defined six-episode story rather than an open-ended season: Bell Media describes each episode as one hour long, and Warner Bros. Discovery’s announcement confirms the six-episode season. Readers who want the source material can look for Rachel Reid’s Game Changers books.
Why does the slow-burn story work?
Character development has room to accumulate
Michael Block’s AOL/Collider feature praises the pacing and character development. That is an evaluative reading, not an objective measure of quality: the case for the show’s gradual approach is that the romance develops alongside the characters, instead of relying only on the fact that its leads begin as rivals.

A second relationship adds context
Block also highlights Scott Hunter and Kip Grady’s relationship as more than a side story. In his reading, it contributes to the central couple’s arc, giving the season another relationship against which to consider intimacy and visibility. That interconnection helps explain why the six-episode format can feel focused rather than slight.
