“As it has for me, this will come as a shock to many of you. Guy has been in the hospital for several weeks,” wrote English on Facebook. “I spoke briefly with him on Monday and was deeply concerned. He took a turn for the worse and it hurts me to tell you, but he died peacefully last night. Needless to say, at this time we are all devastated and simply trying to cope with this tragic news.”
Forbes reported English’s confirmation. Separate reporting by TMZ attributed confirmation to Hovis’s daughter, Julie, but did not name a diagnosis.

How Guy Hovis joined The Lawrence Welk Show
Born in Tupelo, Mississippi, in 1941, Hovis first appeared on the daytime program House Party. He later formed the singing duo Guy & David with David Blaylock, securing a contract with ABC Records. After the duo ended, Hovis performed solo.
He met Ralna English while both were working as performers at a nightclub. After English joined The Lawrence Welk Show, she persuaded bandleader Lawrence Welk to invite Hovis to sing with her. Forbes reports that Hovis performed “Little Toy Trains” and became a regular on the program. The Television Academy Foundation’s history of the show lists him among its singers.

A career beyond the television show
Hovis performed with entertainers including Dinah Shore and Jim Nabors and appeared on talk shows hosted by Johnny Carson, Merv Griffin, Mike Douglas and Joey Bishop, according to Forbes. He began a Christian music ministry in 1986.
From 1990 to 2007, Hovis served as state director for U.S. Senator Trent Lott. He continued to perform occasionally afterward. His television career was part of a longer life in music and public service, rather than the entirety of his work.
