When did The Last of Us season 2 come out?
HBO/WBD first announced in January 2025 that the season would arrive in April. Its February announcement set the U.S. premiere for Sunday, April 13, 2025, at 9 p.m. ET/PT, on HBO and Max. HBO’s U.S. announcement gives the date and service for that market.

Dates differed by market: Max Spain’s official press page listed April 14, 2025, for Spain. The Spanish announcement reflects that local date; it should not be read as the U.S. premiere date. Service names and availability can vary by region.
How many episodes are in season 2?
Season 2 has seven episodes, according to HBO/WBD. Season 1 had nine, as reported by Tom’s Guide, making the follow-up two episodes shorter.

Why does season 2 have fewer episodes?
The seven-episode order was described by co-creator Craig Mazin as a storytelling choice, not simply a network-mandated reduction. In a March 2025 interview reported by GamesRadar+, Mazin said: “A lot happens – and packing this into a single seven-episode season wouldn’t be doing the story justice.”
Neil Druckmann said HBO asked the creators to find a natural stopping point and support the choice they made. His explanation, as quoted in the same report, is that HBO did not prescribe a fixed number of episodes, seasons, or hours; it asked them to make the choices that best served the story.
