On February 2, 2025, Punxsutawney Phil saw his shadow at Gobbler’s Knob in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania. According to the Groundhog Day tradition, that meant six more weeks of winter—not a scientific weather forecast.
What happened at the 2025 Groundhog Day ceremony?
The Punxsutawney Groundhog Club says Phil was awakened at dawn at Gobbler’s Knob, looked toward the sky, and directed the club president to a scroll. Its final line announced: “Get ready for 6 more weeks of winter this year!” The club’s official announcement also included the aside, “Only I know (you can’t trust A.I.),” as part of the written verse.

The club’s 2025 prediction archive records the moment at 7:25 a.m. local time, with a temperature of 17°F and partly sunny conditions. The club reported that more than 30,000 people attended. These details describe the event and its crowd, not the weather across Pennsylvania or the country.
What does seeing his shadow mean?
In the tradition, a shadow means six more weeks of winter; no shadow is taken to mean an early spring. NOAA describes the interpretation as longstanding folklore, not a meteorological outlook. The phrase also roughly fits the calendar: the National Weather Service says the Northern Hemisphere’s official first day of spring falls around March 20 or 21, about six weeks after Groundhog Day.

NOAA has pointed readers to a comparison of groundhog predictions using NOAA/NCEI climate data. But a meaningful accuracy claim depends on the location, weather variable, evaluation period, and scoring method. Without those details, a single percentage would not establish how well Phil predicts local or national weather.

The Groundhog Club says the observance first appeared in a local Punxsutawney newspaper in 1886, followed by the first official trek to Gobbler’s Knob in 1887. The custom has older roots: the National Weather Service cites a February 4, 1841 diary entry by Pennsylvania storekeeper James Morris describing the Candlemas groundhog belief.

The club traces the lore through Candlemas and European weather traditions, including German beliefs that a hedgehog’s shadow could signal a “Second Winter.” German settlers adapted the custom in America around a similar hibernating animal. The 1993 film Groundhog Day later helped turn the observance into the large-scale celebration familiar today, as the Associated Press has reported.
