That is Berry’s account as reported publicly—not an independently verified medical record—and it does not mean painful sex is always caused by perimenopause or that herpes can be ruled out without appropriate testing.
What Halle Berry said happened
ABC News reported that Berry described severe pain after sex, an initial diagnosis of an “extremely bad case of herpes,” and later negative tests for both her and her partner. Berry said she later learned that vaginal dryness could be related to perimenopause. The Associated Press also reported her account of a herpes misdiagnosis during her 2024 remarks about menopause. Can perimenopause cause vaginal dryness and painful sex?
Yes. Perimenopause is the transition leading up to menopause, and hormonal changes—particularly decreasing estrogen—can affect vaginal and urinary tissues. Dryness and reduced lubrication can make sex painful. Persistent symptoms such as burning, itching, pain with sex, or urinary changes may be part of genitourinary syndrome of menopause (GSM), but those symptoms do not establish their cause on their own. Perimenopause generally begins in the mid-40s, according to ACOG, though experiences vary. A person’s age or a single episode of painful sex cannot confirm that perimenopause is the explanation. ACOG: Genitourinary Syndrome of Menopause
Painful sex has more than one possible cause
Dryness is one possibility, not a diagnosis. ACOG notes that painful sex can have multiple causes, and a clinician may use an examination or other tests to investigate. How doctors test for genital herpes
Herpes is a separate possibility that should be assessed according to symptoms and exposure history. CDC recommends testing people who have genital symptoms. When an active lesion is present, a clinician can collect a swab for testing. Blood tests have particular uses and limitations; routine screening of people without symptoms is not recommended in most situations. The right test depends on the clinical circumstances, so Berry’s reported negative tests do not determine what another person’s symptoms mean. CDC: Genital Herpes
CDC’s 2021 STI Treatment Guidelines estimated that 11.9% of people aged 14–49 in the United States had HSV-2 infection. That estimate concerns HSV-2 in that specified U.S. age group; it is not the percentage of people with genital herpes generally and says nothing about Berry’s individual case. What may help with dryness—and when to seek care
ACOG identifies lubricants and vaginal moisturizers as options that may help with dryness or painful sex. They are symptom-support products, not tests: using one cannot show whether pain is caused by perimenopause, herpes, or another condition. If pain is severe, frequent, ongoing, or accompanied by other concerning symptoms, seek professional assessment rather than relying on an over-the-counter product alone.
