Rolling Stone’s 2003 edition of The 500 Greatest Albums of All Time begins with the Beatles’ Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band at No. 1 and the Beach Boys’ Pet Sounds at No. 2. It is a historical magazine ranking, distinct from the later 2012 update and the list rebuilt in 2020.
What is the 2003 greatest albums list?
It is Rolling Stone’s original 2003 edition of The 500 Greatest Albums of All Time, a magazine selection that records a particular era’s critical canon—not an objective or timeless measurement of musical quality. MusicBrainz catalogs the 2003 series and identifies its leading entries: Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band at No. 1, Pet Sounds at No. 2, Revolver at No. 3, and Highway 61 Revisited at No. 4. MusicBrainz’s 2003 series catalog is useful for identifying that edition and its ranks.
How the 2003 list differs from later versions
Rolling Stone says the list first appeared in 2003, received a slight update in 2012, and was remade from scratch in 2020. The magazine’s December 2023 editor’s note describes the subsequent change as a light update to the 2020 list. Its current list page therefore should not be treated as an untouched copy of the original 2003 ranking. Rolling Stone’s list history and current list explains the later revisions.
The 2020 process should not be retroactively attributed to the 2003 edition: for the remake, Rolling Stone tabulated Top 50 album submissions from more than 300 artists, producers, critics, and music-industry figures. The available account does not establish the original 2003 voters or how their votes were weighted.

What kinds of releases are included?
The ranking is not limited to studio albums. The 2003 catalog includes album works alongside entries identified as compilations and live releases. When comparing a particular title, check its release type as well as its rank and edition; otherwise, the different kinds of records can be mistaken for a single like-for-like category.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to read the rankings today
- Name the edition. A rank is meaningful only when paired with “2003,” “2012,” or “2020”; later versions changed the ordering.
- Separate ranking from judgment. The list documents Rolling Stone’s editorial canon at a given time. It can prompt discussion about influence and critical taste, but it does not settle which albums are best.
- Account for release type. The catalog includes compilation and live designations as well as album works, so do not assume every entry is a studio album.
A separate Artometrics analysis of a TidyTuesday extract, published in 2026, reports 691 records, a median 2003 rank of 250, and release years from 1955 to 2019. These figures describe that dataset extract; they should not be read as a definitive statement of the original published list’s exact scope. Artometrics’ analysis gives the dataset context.
