The skin cancer he named was BCC—not melanoma. The reports describe bandaging and stitches near his left ear and jaw, but do not identify the surgical technique or provide a later health update.
What did Gordon Ramsay say about his skin cancer surgery?
On August 30, 2025, Ramsay posted two photos showing bandaging below his left ear and stitches along his jawline below the ear, according to The Skin Cancer Foundation. ITV reported that he thanked The Skin Associates for removing the carcinoma and wrote: “Please don’t forget your sunscreen this weekend, I promise you it’s not a face lift. I’d need a refund.”
The Foundation describes both intense, intermittent UV exposure and cumulative long-term exposure as risk factors for BCC. The reports do not establish what caused Ramsay’s cancer.
What is basal cell carcinoma?
BCC is an abnormal, uncontrolled growth of basal cells in the epidermis, the outer layer of skin. The Skin Cancer Foundation calls it the most common form of skin cancer. Most BCCs grow slowly and are curable when found and treated early, but untreated lesions can invade nearby tissue and cause damage; rarely, BCC can spread or become life-threatening.

It often appears on areas exposed to the sun, including the face, ears, neck, scalp, shoulders and back. Possible signs include a sore that does not heal, a red patch, a pink growth, a shiny bump or a scar-like area. Appearance varies, so a photo or article cannot diagnose a spot. The Foundation advises arranging a dermatologist’s assessment for a new, changing or unusual skin finding. See its basal cell carcinoma overview for more information.
How to use sunscreen and reduce UV exposure
The FDA advises applying sunscreen 15 minutes before going outdoors, using enough to cover exposed skin, and reapplying at least every two hours—and more often after swimming or sweating. Choose a broad-spectrum product for protection against both UVA and UVB rays, and follow the product’s directions. FDA guidance is available at Sunscreen: How to Help Protect Your Skin from the Sun.

The FDA says sunscreen is not waterproof. A product labeled water resistant must state whether it remains effective for 40 or 80 minutes while swimming or sweating; reapply as directed and after toweling off. The CDC recommends broad-spectrum sunscreen of SPF 15 or higher before going outside, with reapplication after more than two hours outdoors and after swimming, sweating or toweling off. Separately, The Skin Cancer Foundation recommends broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher. These are recommendations from different organizations, not a single shared SPF threshold.
Sunscreen works best as part of a broader sun-protection routine. The CDC notes that UV rays can reach you on cloudy and cool days and recommends protection year-round. Its sun-safety guidance includes:
