“Goonies 2” can mean two different things: The Goonies II, a Konami game for the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES), or a live-action film sequel reported to be in development in 2025. The game is an existing release; the cited film reports do not establish whether the project is still moving forward today.
What is The Goonies II?
The Goonies II is a single-player NES game published by Konami. Its manual sets up a rescue mission: Mikey is the last Goonie still free, and he must find six kidnapped friends in Ma Fratelli’s hideout before rescuing Annie the Mermaid. The manual puts it plainly: “Before you go, though, you gotta rescue all six Goonie buddies and best pal, Annie the Mermaid.” (Game manual)
The hideout is presented as a maze of action scenes and rooms to explore. Mikey uses weapons and “magic implements” to progress, and a password system lets players continue later. These are details about the game—not evidence about a film sequel’s plot or continuity.
When did the NES game come out?
GameFAQs lists three regional release dates for the NES version. Its catalog entry identifies Konami as publisher and NES as the platform; Nintendo Life also describes it as the second Goonies game on NES and summarizes its rescue premise.

The dates are from GameFAQs’ release listing; the contextual description is from Nintendo Life. They are cataloged regional release dates, not a claim that every market received the game at the same time.
Is Goonies 2 a real movie?
A film sequel was reported in development, but the available reporting does not confirm its current status. On February 14, 2025, AS/Meristation reported that Warner Bros. had hired Potsy Ponciroli to write a sequel. The report named Steven Spielberg, Kristie Macosko Krieger, and Holly Bario as producers through Amblin Entertainment, with Chris Columbus and Lauren Shuler Donner as executive producers. On September 2, 2025, GamesRadar reported from a Venice Film Festival panel that Ponciroli said a first draft had been well received and that he was working on a second draft. GamesRadar quoted him: “I have turned in a first draft, which was very well received, and I’m on a second draft and I’m about 95% done with that, so we’re moving in the right direction.” That is a statement reported in September 2025, not a current production update. In that same report, no release date had been set and no original cast members were attached as of the report. The cited coverage establishes that development was reported in 2025; it does not establish the project’s status now, whether production has begun, who is currently cast, or when a film might be released.

Game or film: how to tell which “Goonies 2” you mean
