Entertainment coverage reported that Gwen Stefani and Blake Shelton’s 2025 American Music Awards performances were pre-recorded, prompting critical reactions from some viewers online. The awards show’s own recap confirms what each performed, but does not describe the segments as live or explain why they were pre-recorded.
What Gwen Stefani and Blake Shelton performed
The 2025 American Music Awards took place on May 26. In its post-show recap, the AMAs said Shelton made his performance debut at the ceremony with “Stay Country or Die Tryin’.” Stefani performed a medley marking the 20th anniversary of Love.Angel.Music.Baby, including “Hollaback Girl” and a song from her newer album Bouquet.
The show’s May 15 performer announcement had previewed Stefani’s anniversary medley and named “Hollaback Girl” and a song from Bouquet. The post-show recap confirms the performances as presented in the official account of the event.
Were the performances pre-recorded?
TV Insider reported that posts of the performances prompted viewers to say the Stefani and Shelton segments had been pre-recorded rather than performed live at the venue. That report concerns the timing of the segments; the AMAs’ recap does not address whether they were recorded in advance.

The available accounts do not explain why the performances were recorded ahead of the broadcast, whether production circumstances shaped the arrangement, or what attendees were told beforehand. Those details should not be inferred from the fact of pre-recording alone.
Why some viewers reacted critically
TV Insider described critical reactions in social-media posts and accounts. The reporting captures some viewers’ responses, not a representative measure of the entire audience or all people watching at home. No poll or reliable count of how many viewers objected is established by the cited coverage.

The dispute centered on the performances being pre-recorded, but the available reporting does not establish a broader production explanation or prove that viewers were promised a live performance.
