When did they separate?
May 6, 2013: Date later listed in a filing
A 2015 Los Angeles Times report on Paltrow’s divorce petition said she listed May 6, 2013, as the date of separation. This is the date reported from the court filing, not the date the couple publicly announced their separation.
March 25, 2014: Public announcement
The couple announced their separation on March 25, 2014, in a Goop post titled “Conscious Uncoupling.” Their joint statement emphasized privacy and their intention to co-parent:

“We have always conducted our relationship privately, and we hope that as we consciously uncouple and co-parent, we will be able to continue in the same manner.”
The statement is evidence of what they chose to say publicly; it does not establish a definitive private reason for the separation. Martin had previously spoken about protecting family privacy. In a 2009 60 Minutes interview, he said, “If you talk about your family life, then the amount of people who hang around outside your house trebles the next week.”

Paltrow’s later account of the media attention
In a January 2026 interview, Paltrow said negative media attention following the separation may have contributed to her losing a film role. Recalling the distributor’s reaction, she said, “This might be too hot to touch.” That was Paltrow’s account of what she believed the distributor said, not an independently verified statement from the distributor or proof that the coverage caused the role loss.
