Grace VanderWaal released “Clearly” on March 30, 2018, reworking Johnny Nash’s “I Can See Clearly Now” with new lyrics and a different treatment. It is not simply an unchanged cover: the chorus incorporates lyrics and melody from Nash’s 1972 song, while VanderWaal’s version frames that material around her own message of hope and self-acceptance.
What is “Clearly”?
Columbia Records described “Clearly” as a reprise of “I Can See Clearly Now” with new and original lyrics. It was VanderWaal’s first official release after her debut album, Just the Beginning, which came out in November 2017. Columbia Records announced the single on March 30, 2018.
The Recording Academy characterized the song as an interpolation: it brings lyrics and melody from Nash’s 1972 classic into the chorus rather than reproducing the earlier recording as-is. NME Japan reported that producer Ido Zmishlany introduced VanderWaal to Nash’s song, and that lyrics came to her as she sang it. The Recording Academy’s account and NME Japan’s report describe those aspects of its development.
How is it different from Johnny Nash’s song?
Nash’s “I Can See Clearly Now” is the source for recognizable lyrics and melody in “Clearly’s” chorus. VanderWaal’s release adds new lyrics and presents the material as a reworking, so the most accurate description is a reprise or interpolation—not an unchanged cover. The available sources do not establish a detailed, track-by-track comparison of the arrangements.

What does VanderWaal say the song means?
Columbia Records quoted VanderWaal describing the song as a response to difficult circumstances: “My new single ‘Clearly’ is about hope, and having the courage to face the world which can be pretty tough sometimes,” she said.
The label also quoted her on the theme of self-acceptance: “As much as we try to change ourselves, we will always be the same person deep down. We should embrace what makes us different and love that about ourselves.” These statements place the song’s reuse of Nash’s familiar chorus within a message about facing hardship and valuing individuality.
