In a translated interview with io9/Gizmodo, published November 1, 2024, he argued that films and series with sharply different tones can coexist under the Godzilla name—and that this variety needs to be balanced with restraint.
What Yamazaki thinks Godzilla Minus One showed audiences
Speaking with James Whitbrook and Adriano Contreras at New York Comic Con, ahead of a panel about Godzilla Minus One and the franchise’s 70th anniversary, Yamazaki said the film helped demonstrate how much thematic depth a kaiju story can hold. He believes that gave people across generations something to discuss, from a cerebral central idea to the experience of watching as a family. These are his impressions of the film’s reception, not findings from an audience survey.
In the English interview, Yamazaki said through a translator: “I think Godzilla, and what we were able to do with Godzilla Minus One, really showed that there are so many layers, and that there’s thematic depth that we can to a Kaiju movie—I think that gave older generations something to think about, a cerebral core concept, but I think that extends to families as well, spanning generations.” The published wording is awkward; the point he was making is that the film could offer both intellectual substance and a shared, cross-generational experience.
Why different Godzillas can share one franchise
Yamazaki’s argument for Godzilla’s longevity is not that every entry should tell the same kind of story. He points instead to the franchise’s ability to accommodate distinct interpretations. In the interview, he cited the coexistence of Toho’s Godzilla Minus One, Legendary’s Godzilla x Kong films, and Apple TV+’s Monarch as an example of that range.

| Work cited in the interview | Associated maker or label | What it represents in Yamazaki’s argument |
|---|---|---|
| Godzilla Minus One | Toho | A distinct interpretation of Godzilla, made by Yamazaki’s team |
| Godzilla x Kong films | Legendary | Another interpretation within the broader franchise |
| Monarch | Apple TV+ | A television-series take alongside the films |
As Yamazaki put it in translated remarks, “The fact that it can be so diverse and be open to many different interpretations, it’s all still unified under this umbrella that is Godzilla.” That is his reading of the franchise’s strength, not evidence of a formal strategy shared by all the companies involved.
Why he says the franchise also needs restraint
Creative variety alone is not enough, in Yamazaki’s view. He cautioned that using Godzilla too relentlessly could erode audience trust: “if you milk it too hard, that would lose the audience’s trust.” The warning sits beside his endorsement of different tones and approaches: the franchise can keep evolving, but he believes it should not treat the character as an unlimited resource.

How Yamazaki describes the film’s production
Yamazaki characterized Godzilla Minus One’s budget as modest by Hollywood standards but top-tier within Japanese live-action filmmaking. He said the production could draw on one of Japan’s biggest and best teams, and that working on a Godzilla film encouraged people to push harder. He also described making a Godzilla movie at this level as a lifetime goal. The interview gives no dollar budget or comparable production-cost figures, so it does not establish a precise cost difference with any Hollywood film.
Asked what he might change, Yamazaki said the team had done its best within its constraints rather than proposing a different version of the finished film. He named one specific regret: “I wish we could’ve filmed it in full resolution for IMAX!”

The same 2024 interview said Godzilla Minus One was available on Blu-ray and DVD when it was published.
