Andy Muschietti said on August 3, 2026, that the writers’ room was active; HBO’s renewal followed on August 17. The new season is set in 1935 and centers on the Bradley Gang Massacre, with the Great Depression and the era’s social realities at the story’s core.
Season 2 is renewed, after the writers’ room update
In an August 3, 2026 interview with Variety, co-creator Andy Muschietti said, “We’re very excited, we’re in the writers’ room right now.” That was a creator update, published before HBO’s renewal was publicly reported. Variety reported on August 18 that HBO had renewed the series on August 17.
The distinction matters: the writers’ room comment signaled work underway, while the later report supplied the formal renewal news. Variety also reported that Brad Caleb Kane, who co-showran Season 1 with Jason Fuchs, will be the sole showrunner for Season 2.
What Season 2 is about
A return to Depression-era Derry
The season moves back to 1935, 27 years before Season 1’s 1962 setting. It is based on the Bradley Gang Massacre, an episode from Stephen King’s It. Variety’s renewal report describes the Bradley Gang as bank robbers who stop in Derry to buy ammunition.

The historical hardship is part of the story
Muschietti said the period’s social and cultural horrors would not be left at the margins: “We’re not going to skip those. [They are the] very center and the heart of our story.” He described a town that looks “a graveyard almost,” with residents who are poor, exhausted, jobless, and homeless. The children in the story include orphans and runaways, though Muschietti said hope remains part of their experience.
That framing suggests the season’s period setting is more than a backdrop for Pennywise. The creators say Derry’s social conditions and the vulnerability of its residents will be central to the horror.

How the new season fits the wider story
Muschietti has described a larger creative plan connecting Derry stories across 1962, 1935, and 1908, with family history helping link the timelines. That is a stated plan, not confirmation that HBO has ordered a third season. HBO’s reported renewal is for Season 2.
The Bradley Gang storyline draws on an interlude in King’s novel, so the book is relevant background for readers who want to see the source material behind this period of Derry’s history. The series remains a prequel to the two-part film adaptation, according to Variety.

What has not been announced
Variety reported on August 18 that no Season 2 casting had been announced. SYFY Wire’s August 19 guide likewise said there was no specific premiere date and production had not begun at that time. Those are dated August snapshots, not confirmation of the series’ status as of October 2026; the cited reports do not establish a current release date, production start, or cast announcement.
In that same August 19 guide, Sarah Aubrey, Head of HBO Max Original Programming, said the network was excited to return to Derry and expand the Muschiettis’ adaptation. No platform or geographic availability details for Season 2 are established by these reports.
