“Guardians of the Galaxy” can mean the 2014 feature film or the 2021 video game, and they warrant separate verdicts. The film is a lively, heartfelt space-opera comedy that earned strongly positive Rotten Tomatoes scores at the time accessed. The game also received a positive Metacritic snapshot, but its strongest cited praise is for its writing, while its combat, traversal, and puzzles can feel repetitive.
Which Guardians of the Galaxy are these reviews about?
This guide covers two different works, not one franchise-wide review: Guardians of the Galaxy (2014), a PG-13 science-fiction, action-adventure, fantasy, and comedy film running 2 hours and 1 minute; and Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy (2021), a third-person action-adventure game. Their scores come from different platforms and measure different things.

Is Guardians of the Galaxy (2014) worth watching?
Yes, if you want an irreverent space adventure that balances jokes and spectacle with a warm ensemble story. Rotten Tomatoes’ editorial consensus calls the film “funny, thrilling, full of heart,” while also praising its visual splendor. The consensus reflects the outlet’s assessment, not a guarantee that every viewer or critic will respond the same way.
At access in 2026, Rotten Tomatoes displayed a 91% Tomatometer from 339 reviews and a 92% Popcornmeter from more than 250,000 ratings. These are separate critic-review and audience-rating measures, not a single score; the live totals can change. Drew McWeeny’s individual review, excerpted by Metacritic in July 2014, called it “the most charming Marvel movie so far.” That is one critic’s view, rather than a universal consensus.
#1 Best Overall
- LEAD THE GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY - You play as Star-Lord, so nothing's off-limits with your bold combat style, from Element Blasters and jet boot-powered dropkicks to tag-team beat-downs. With the Guardians fighting at your side, call the shots and overwhelm your opponents with signature attacks. Meanwhile, the consequences of your decisions will range from light-hearted to downright unexpected as your journey unfolds.
- ALL-NEW STORY - Your newly-formed band of legendary misfits is set to save the universe in this fresh but faithful take on the Guardians of the Galaxy. Somehow, you set off a chain of catastrophic events, leading to a wild ride through mind-blowing worlds inhabited by iconic and original Marvel characters. Turn up the all-star '80s mixtape and get ready to kick it.
- FROM MISFITS TO SUPERHEROES - You're the only thing holding the unpredictable Guardians together, so you'll have to get better at this leadership thing fast. With this offbeat approximation of a family at your side, there will be tears and laughter as you set about tearing into the cosmos together. Whatever's waiting around the next corner, you know it's going to be a blast.
Is Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy (2021) worth playing?
It is a stronger fit for players drawn to character writing and a story-led adventure than for those seeking deep or constantly varied combat. Metacritic displayed an 80 Metascore from 98 critic reviews and an 8.4 user score from 2,653 user ratings when accessed in 2026. Those totals apply to the game, and the page also breaks out platform-specific critic scores and review counts; they are not comparable to the film’s Rotten Tomatoes percentages.
In her October 26, 2021 review, The Guardian’s Malindy Hetfeld praised natural dialogue, expressive characters, and a story with interesting turns, writing that “the writing in Guardians of the Galaxy is the best thing about the game.” Her reservation is that combat, traversal, and puzzles are simplistic and become repetitive or drawn out. The review lists PlayStation 4 and 5, Xbox One and Series X/S, and Nintendo Switch as platforms.

The table places the works side by side for orientation, not score comparison: Rotten Tomatoes percentages and Metacritic’s 100-point score and user score are different measures, drawn from different audiences and review populations.
