Spoilers for Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire: Skar King is the film’s tyrannical Great Ape antagonist, a ruler in Hollow Earth who commands other apes and controls Shimo. That combination makes him more than a dangerous fighter: he can marshal forces, turning the conflict into a threat the heroes must face together.
Who is Skar King?
Skar King is a new Titan antagonist created for Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire. The Associated Press described him as 318 feet tall in its March 21, 2024 report; that is a reported figure, not an independently verified measurement of a real creature. The film places him in Hollow Earth, where he rules a group of Great Apes.
His power rests not only on physical strength but on control. He commands the apes and Shimo, giving him an organized force rather than making him a solitary monster. Director Adam Wingard’s production notes compare that kind of threat to humanity’s use of armies and weapons of mass destruction. That is Wingard’s analogy for the scale of the danger, not a claim that Skar King possesses human weapons.
What does Skar King control?
The Hollow Earth apes
Kong’s story brings him into contact with other members of his kind, who live under Skar King’s rule in a harsh subterranean setting. Wingard described their circumstances as a “kind of hellscape.” The apes make Skar King’s authority collective: his threat comes from command over a group as well as from his own capacity to fight.

Shimo
Skar King also controls Shimo, adding another powerful creature to the forces at his disposal. This is the key escalation beyond a contest between individual Titans. The heroes have to unite to stop a danger backed by both an army of apes and Shimo.
Why is Skar King a threat to Kong and Godzilla?
The film broadens the conflict beyond the Godzilla-and-Kong rivalry by giving the antagonist forces he can direct. Wingard’s production notes describe Skar King as controlling a threat on the scale of armies and weapons in the human world. In story terms, the difference is organization and coercion: defeating one opponent is not enough if that opponent can command others.

The filmmakers also used the confrontation to showcase the agility of Skar King and Kong. Their shared identity as Great Apes makes the conflict a physical face-off, but Skar King’s command over others distinguishes his position from Kong’s.
What does Skar King represent?
Wingard said the character allowed the film to tell a story about humanity’s destructive side from a monster’s perspective. In the production notes, he explained: “Because of the humanity within Kong’s character, we were able to come up with a villain like the Skar King—it opened the door where we could tell that same ‘evil side of humanity’ story, but from the monster perspective, and that means creating an even bigger threat that the Skar King is in control of.”

This is the director’s stated creative intent, not evidence that the film maps Skar King onto a particular government, historical figure, or real-world event. The idea is expressed through domination and control in the monsters’ world.
How do Skar King and Kong’s stories differ?
Wingard described Kong’s discovery of his kind as one half of a parallel story. The other follows Jia as she learns that the Iwi still exist in a civilization in Hollow Earth. He summarized the contrast this way: “One is Jia’s [played by Kaylee Hottle] journey to discover that there are others of her kind, the Iwi, that still exist in an amazing civilization in Hollow Earth. And on the flipside of that is Kong’s story. He’s also about to discover that there are others of his kind, but in his case, they’re toiling away in this subterranean kind of hellscape.”

That contrast helps explain Skar King’s role: Kong’s encounter with his people is shaped by their subjugation, while Jia’s is a discovery of an enduring civilization. Both stories concern finding others of one’s kind, but they lead into sharply different worlds.
