In July 2024, Goodreads temporarily limited ratings and reviews for J.D. Vance’s Hillbilly Elegy. The notice said the restriction might be due to “unusual behavior that doesn’t follow our review guidelines.” Goodreads’ policy allows both praise and criticism, but the company did not publicly explain what triggered this restriction. The reports do not establish that negative opinions alone caused it or that every affected review was inauthentic.
What Goodreads users saw
On July 16, 2024, Gizmodo reported that Goodreads had temporarily disabled rating and reviewing for Hillbilly Elegy. The notice reproduced in its report read: “This book has temporary limitations on submitting ratings and reviews. This may be because we’ve detected unusual behavior that doesn’t follow our review guidelines.” Gizmodo’s July 2024 report said Goodreads referred the outlet to the notice and declined to comment further.
Does Goodreads prohibit negative reviews?
No. In a statement quoted by 404 Media, Goodreads said: “Goodreads welcomes a wide variety of reviews—whether positive or negative—but prohibits reviews that are not relevant to the book, harass readers or authors, or attempt to artificially deflate or inflate the overall rating of the book.” The outlet reported that Goodreads declined to comment on the record about disabling ratings for Hillbilly Elegy. 404 Media’s report therefore provides the company’s general policy, not a specific explanation of this case.
What the reports establish—and what they do not
The 2024 reports establish that ratings and reviews were temporarily restricted and that the user-facing notice cited possible unusual activity inconsistent with Goodreads’ guidelines. They do not disclose the specific activity that prompted the restriction.

- The restriction is not evidence by itself that Goodreads blocked reviews simply because they were critical.
- It also does not prove that every review or account affected was fake or manipulative.
- Goodreads’ catalog guidelines describe a broad catalog intended to cover a wide range of viewpoints, including ideas readers may disagree with. That is separate from the reported review-submission restriction; the book was not reported as removed from the catalog. Goodreads’ catalog guidelines
The reporting establishes the July 2024 episode, but not whether ratings and reviews are available on the book’s Goodreads page today. It would be inaccurate to describe the restriction as current without confirming the live title page.
Why the book drew strong reactions
Published in 2016, Hillbilly Elegy: A Memoir of a Family and Culture in Crisis recounts Vance’s childhood in Ohio and Kentucky, family instability and addiction, his Marine service, and his education at Ohio State and Yale Law School. It also reflects on poverty and upward mobility. TIME connected the memoir’s political resonance to interest in understanding Donald Trump’s electoral support. In its introduction, Vance wrote: “You see, I grew up poor, in the Rust Belt, in an Ohio steel town that has been hemorrhaging jobs and hope for as long as I can remember.” TIME’s account of the book and its reception reports that HarperCollins said the book had sold three million copies.

The memoir also drew criticism from historians and journalists who challenged its generalizations about Appalachia and its assumptions about the region. Readers looking for regional responses can turn to Elizabeth Catte’s What You Are Getting Wrong About Appalachia and the 2019 anthology Appalachian Reckoning: A Region Responds to ‘Hillbilly Elegy’, which brings together multiple contributors responding to the book. These works offer context and counterpoints; they should not be treated as evidence that all critiques make the same argument. TIME discusses the responses and criticism.
