Bengali detective fiction has produced a varied cast of sleuths, investigators and adventurers. Feluda and Byomkesh Bakshi have established screen lives, but they are only part of the tradition. This selective guide looks at the characters who have reached film or television and the ones whose stories could support more ambitious adaptations.
A tradition bigger than any screen list
Bengali detective fiction is a popular literary tradition that has travelled across film, television and radio. An academic overview names Daroga Priyonath, Byomkesh Bakshi, Feluda, Kiriti Roy and Mitin Maashi among its popular characters; university course material also places Colonel Niladri Sarkar, Arjun and Pandab Goyenda in the wider field. This is a guide to selected screen histories, not a definitive census of the genre. Academic overview; University course material.
These characters do not all do the same kind of work. Some are amateur detectives, some investigate as police officers, and some are better understood as adventure heroes. That variety matters when considering which stories suit the screen—and what kind of adaptation each one needs.
Established screen figures
Feluda: the sharp amateur sleuth
Prodosh Chandra Mitra, better known as Feluda, was created by Satyajit Ray. The character is part of the established screen landscape. In 2022, Feludar Goyendagiri premiered on Hoichoi, according to The Telegraph India. That report establishes a premiere, not current streaming availability; catalogs may change by date and territory.

#1 Best Overall
Byomkesh Bakshi: the literary detective with documented screen episodes
Sharadindu Bandyopadhyay created Byomkesh Bakshi. Prasar Bharati’s episode pages identify him as a fictional Bengali literary detective and document screen episodes, providing an official broadcaster record of adaptations. Prasar Bharati episode pages.
Other screen detectives—and different kinds of heroes
Kiriti Roy: a detective with a screen debut
Nihar Ranjan Gupta created Kiriti Roy. The 2016 Scroll article discusses the character’s Bengali-screen debut. That is useful evidence of a screen appearance, but it does not establish a comprehensive adaptation history. Scroll’s guide.
Shabor Dasgupta: a police investigator
Shabor Dasgupta is a police officer investigator, rather than a private consulting detective. The distinction points toward a procedural crime mode: his work is rooted in an official investigative role, unlike a sleuth who takes cases outside a police force.
Kakababu: adventure first
Sunil Gangopadhyay’s Raja Roy Chowdhury, known as Kakababu, is an adventure-oriented character discussed in connection with film adaptation. Treating him simply as another private investigator would blur what makes his stories distinct: the appeal is adventure as well as mystery.
Rank #3
Arjun and Gogol: room for more screen life
Arjun, created by Samaresh Majumdar, has had a screen appearance. Scroll’s 2016 article argues that he could support more ambitious screen treatment; that is an editorial judgment, not a measured assessment of demand or adaptation potential. The article also notes a screen adaptation of Gogol and places him among the younger or less extensively adapted options. Scroll’s guide.
Where a broader screen conversation should go
Mitin Maashi and women sleuths
Mitin Maashi, created by Suchitra Bhattacharya, belongs in any wider discussion of Bengali literary detectives: the academic overview names her among popular characters. A screen-centered lineup that leaves women sleuths at the margins should not be mistaken for the full history of Bengali detective fiction. Academic overview.
More than a ranking
“Which detectives need to reach the screen?” has no objective scoreboard behind it. The 2016 article’s suggestions are an invitation to debate, not a settled ranking. The sources cited here do not establish reliable adaptation totals, audience figures or popularity measurements. A fair comparison can instead ask what each character offers: an amateur’s deductions, a police investigator’s procedural cases, or an adventure hero’s broader world.

For a sense of the range, start with an adaptation whose character or setting interests you, then look for the source stories. Reading back from screen versions reveals what a new adaptation chooses to retain, change or leave out. If you are looking for a particular book or collection, check its language, edition and availability rather than assuming every character is available in the same format.
