The casting reflects the show’s shifting timeline: Skovbye plays Tully during her younger years, while Heigl represents her as an adult. For Kate, the corresponding performers are Curtis as young Kate and Chalke as adult Kate. The comparison is about the characters’ different life stages, not a contest between actors.
How was Skovbye cast as young Tully?
Finding younger performers who could convincingly represent the adult characters was a deliberate casting challenge. In a Netflix Tudum feature published December 6, 2022, showrunner Maggie Friedman praised Skovbye and Curtis after their auditions, saying the young actors “walked in and were incredible.” Friedman also said of Skovbye, “I could not believe how much Ali resembles a young Katherine Heigl.” Those are Friedman’s attributed impressions of the casting, rather than independent assessments.

What is Firefly Lane about, and is it based on a book?
Firefly Lane centers on the friendship between Tully and Kate over multiple decades. Netflix describes young Tully as a new neighbor whose bond with Kate becomes central to the story. Skovbye has described the appeal of that focus in a Netflix Tudum interview: “Being able to play strong, powerful women and have [the] story focus not on a romantic relationship, but a platonic relationship, is beautiful.”
The series is based on Kristin Hannah’s 2008 novel Firefly Lane. TIME notes that the book and television adaptation tell the decades-spanning friendship differently, so readers should expect changes in how the story is structured rather than a scene-for-scene transfer. TIME’s discussion of the novel and adaptation explains that relationship between the two versions.
