Gram Chikitsalay Season 1 OTT Review: A Bitter Pill to Swallow

Gram Chikitsalay builds its first season around a neglected rural health centre, but critics differed on whether its writing and pace match the premise. Season 2 has its own, more qualified reassessment.

Gram Chikitsalay starts with a promising idea: an idealistic young doctor takes charge of a neglected rural health centre and discovers that improving it means navigating more than medicine. In the first season, sincere performances and a public-healthcare setting give the series its appeal, but several critics found its writing and pace less compelling than its premise. This review covers Season 1, released in 2025; Prime Video’s current listing shows two seasons, and Season 2 received separate coverage in 2026.

What is Gram Chikitsalay about?

Prime Video’s listing follows young, idealistic Dr. Prabhat as he takes charge of a neglected Primary Health Centre (PHC) in a North Indian village. He soon learns that repairing the facility is only part of the challenge: he must also change his approach and earn the community’s trust. Amol Parashar, Vinay Pathak and Anandeshwar Dwivedi are among the listed cast. See Prime Video’s series listing.

The five-episode first season introduces practical and social obstacles through the health centre: access, missing medicines, villagers’ preference for a local healer, local politics and stigma around mental illness. These are elements of the show’s story, not evidence about healthcare conditions in any particular real-world village.

How well does Season 1 work?

A strong premise, uneven execution

The rural-healthcare focus gives the series a distinct subject, and its central conflict offers room for comedy as well as human drama. But the show’s effectiveness depends on how well its writing develops that conflict. Scroll.in critic Nandini Ramnath judged it harshly, writing on May 9, 2025: “Gram Chikitsalay is barely engaging, bereft as it is of Panchayat’s strong writing and staging.” She also faulted the slack pacing and reliance on exaggerated local eccentricity. Shubhra Gupta’s May 9, 2025 review for The Indian Express likewise called the series a safe, staid “Panchayat redux,” pointing to familiar framing and a slow pace. Those are critics’ assessments, not a measured consensus. Read Gupta’s review.

Not every critic was as dismissive

Abhishek Srivastav’s Times of India review, also published May 9, 2025, offered a more favorable take, calling the season “A beautiful blend of satire, emotion, and rural truths.” The contrast shows that first-season responses differed; it does not establish an overall rating or audience consensus. Is Gram Chikitsalay like Panchayat?

The comparison is a recurring critical frame because both series are set in rural India and draw on local characters and community life. For Ramnath and Gupta, that resemblance sharpened the question of whether Gram Chikitsalay had writing and staging strong enough to stand apart. It is more useful to treat the comparison as a way critics described tone and execution than as a claim that the shows share a story world.

The more important distinction is subject: Gram Chikitsalay places a PHC and access to care at the centre of its premise. Whether that focus becomes a compelling drama depends on the series’ pace, character development and willingness to connect a village-level story to wider causes.

Is Season 2 better?

Season 2 should be judged separately from the 2025 first-season reviews. In his June 24, 2026 review, Rediff’s Sreeju Sudhakaran describes residents gradually giving Prabhat’s facility a chance, continued medicine shortages and a campaign for an “Adarsh PHC” designation. He finds the follow-up warmer and its leads better developed, but argues that it gives limited attention to the larger causes behind rural health-system problems. That is a more positive assessment of the characters and tone, not a claim that the show resolves the weaknesses critics identified in Season 1. Read Sudhakaran’s Season 2 review.
