Grafted Review: A Sick Satire That Falls Just Short of Covering the Ugly Side of Beauty

Sasha Rainbow’s Grafted turns rejection over appearance into grotesque black comedy. Its body-horror premise lands more forcefully than its critique of beauty culture.

Grafted turns rejection over appearance into a grotesque black comedy about trying to remake the body—and the damage that ambition can cause. Sasha Rainbow’s film has a vivid horror premise and a punky streak, but its satire does not dig as deeply into beauty and identity as that premise promises.

What is Grafted about?

Wei is a Chinese scholarship student in New Zealand, where she pursues medical research left behind by her late father. Shy and self-conscious about a genetic facial birthmark, she is rejected by her cousin Angela and Angela’s glamorous friends. Wei turns to her father’s experimental skin-grafting work in hopes of changing her prospects; the research takes a dangerous turn. That premise makes the body horror a consequence of social cruelty and a desire to belong, not simply a warning that beauty is bad.

The New Zealand International Film Festival billed the 2024 film as “a gory and uniquely Kiwi black comedy.” Its “Mean Girls meets Face/Off” shorthand suggests a collision of social humiliation and bodily transformation, though it is promotional framing rather than a critical verdict. Director Sasha Rainbow described the beauty obsession at the story’s heart as having “a certain Frankenstein nature.”

What works in the satire—and what falls short?

The strongest idea in Grafted is the connection between how others treat Wei and the extreme means she reaches for to change herself. The skin-grafting experiment gives that pressure a physical, horrific form, while the film’s black comedy lets the ugliness of the social world sit alongside the grotesque spectacle. The target is not only beauty culture; it is also the rejection and social cruelty that make acceptance seem conditional on appearance.

But the premise raises questions about shame, identity and belonging that the film’s critique does not fully answer. In his January 21, 2025 review, Phil Hoad of The Guardian judged its commentary “actually more superficial than Coralie Fargeat’s film in terms of what it says about appearance,” referring to The Substance. Hoad also noted the film’s punky style. That is one critic’s assessment, not a consensus; Rotten Tomatoes’ review page reflects differing responses rather than a single settled verdict. My reservation is similar: the physical excess and social premise are more immediately forceful than the film’s exploration of what rejection does to Wei or how appearance shapes her relationships.

Is Grafted like The Substance?

The comparison is useful for setting expectations: both films use body horror to engage with beauty standards. It does not make them interchangeable. Hoad’s comparison specifically argues that Grafted is more superficial in what it says about appearance, even as he recognizes its punky attitude. Grafted is best approached as a black comedy with a grotesque transformation at its centre, rather than as an equally developed counterpart to The Substance.

Is Grafted worth watching?

If you want body horror mixed with dark comedy and a story about the costs of being judged by appearance, the film has a compelling starting point and a distinctive tone. If you are looking for a sustained, nuanced examination of beauty culture, its thematic reach may feel limited. Its core tension is memorable; its social critique does not always match the force of its premise.
