He was booked on a misdemeanor battery allegation. In June, prosecutors decided not to charge him after he completed the Los Angeles City Attorney’s Office hearing process, including a community-service requirement.
What Killer Mike won at the 2024 Grammys
At the 66th Grammy Awards on February 4, Killer Mike won three awards during the Premiere Ceremony: Best Rap Album for Michael, and Best Rap Song and Best Rap Performance for “Scientists & Engineers,” according to The Associated Press.
Why police detained him
Later that day, police detained and handcuffed Mike, whose legal name is Michael Render, after a reported physical altercation near the arena. ABC News reported that the incident was at the 700 block of Chick Hearn Court, outside Crypto.com Arena, and that he was booked on a misdemeanor battery allegation. Booking on an allegation does not establish guilt.
Mike offered his own explanation in a statement reported by the Associated Press: “As you can imagine, there was a lot going and there was some confusion around which door my team and I should enter.” He also said, “We experienced an over-zealous security guard but my team and I have the upmost confidence that I will ultimately be cleared of all wrongdoing.” Those remarks describe his account of the encounter, not an official finding. The Associated Press and Pitchfork published the statement.

Was Killer Mike charged, and what happened to the case?
No. On June 27, 2024, the Los Angeles City Attorney’s Office confirmed that Render had completed its hearing process, including a community-service requirement, and prosecutors decided not to charge him, The Washington Post reported. The office’s statement, quoted by the Post, said: “Mr. Render has successfully completed the Office’s Hearing process, including a community service requirement that was imposed.” The Washington Post reported the disposition.

The public record described in contemporaneous reporting establishes that police detained and booked Mike on a misdemeanor battery allegation, and that prosecutors later decided not to charge him after the City Attorney’s Office process. The detailed circumstances of the encounter were not established as a court finding in the cited reporting. Mike’s explanation and the reported allegation should therefore remain distinct from the case outcome.
