Germany’s Navy said there was “no deeper message” behind the music choice, according to the Associated Press.
What music was the German ship playing?
The tune was the Imperial March, widely associated with Darth Vader in the Star Wars films. A bystander recorded the ship’s passage on Monday of that week, and the video circulated on social media. The Associated Press reported the incident on August 22, 2024, and attributed the explanation “no deeper message” to Germany’s Navy. Associated Press report
Why did the Navy choose the Imperial March?
The Navy’s reported response was that the choice had “no deeper message.” AP did not name the person who provided that response, so it should be understood as the Navy’s explanation as reported by AP, not as a quotation from a named spokesperson.
The available report does not establish what recording or arrangement was played, or give a more specific rationale. The Darth Vader association made the moment striking, but the evidence does not support reading it as an official message or statement.

Which warship was it?
The AP report and its video description identify the vessel only as a German warship. They do not establish its name, class, precise itinerary, or official reason for being in London. Those details should not be inferred from the footage or from information about other navies’ vessels.

Navies do not necessarily use ship labels in identical ways. The Bundeswehr’s explainer discusses how the meaning and use of “frigate” have varied across eras and navies; it does not identify the ship seen on the Thames. Bundeswehr: “Fregatte ist nicht gleich Fregatte”
For a separate British example, the Royal Navy describes its own Daring class as six Type 45 destroyers designed for air and missile defence. That is context about Royal Navy ships, not evidence about the unidentified German vessel. Royal Navy: Daring Class Type 45 Destroyer
