Harald von Hohenzollern-Emden died at 63 in late June 2025, around nine months after marrying Josefa von Hohenzollern and shortly before the couple’s first child was due. Contemporary reports attributed his death to a sudden cardiac event. Josefa later announced that their son, Leopold, was born on July 31, 2025.
When did Harald von Hohenzollern die?
Harald’s wife announced his death on June 25, 2025. German reports published around June 25–26 said he had collapsed while going to his car earlier that week and that attempts to resuscitate him failed. The announcement date and the reported date of death are not necessarily the same.
Multiple accounts place the death in Namibia, with one naming Windhoek. A separate, isolated search-result extract gives Botswana and June 28, a date that conflicts with the contemporaneous German reporting. The location and exact date are therefore not consistently established across the available accounts.
What was reported as the cause of death?
Contemporaneous reports described a heart attack or sudden cardiac death. HOLA! USA’s English rendering of Josefa’s Instagram announcement reads: “My beloved husband Harald v. Hohenzollern died completely unexpectedly of a sudden cardiac death.” The outlet also rendered her words as: “This loss hits me very deep. I need time to grieve, say goodbye and be there for our unborn child.” These are the publication’s English translations of her reported statement; an original-language post was not independently verified.

Stuttgarter Zeitung reported Josefa saying, “Ich brauche nun Zeit und Ruhe für mein Kind und mich” (“I now need time and peace for my child and myself,” translated). The paper also quoted her on continuing her mayoral candidacy: “Das wäre auch im Sinne meines Mannes” (“That would also be in my husband’s best interest,” translated). The quotations are reported by the newspaper.
Was their child born?
At the time of Harald’s death, Josefa was pregnant with their first child and was expected to give birth in July 2025. Infobae later reported that she announced the birth of their son, Leopold, on July 31, 2025. That was about five weeks after the June 25 death announcement.
