George R.R. Martin objected to House of the Dragon Season 2 removing Maelor Targaryen from the Blood and Cheese sequence, warning that the change could affect later story events. He made the case in a September 4, 2024 post titled “Beware the Butterflies.” The post was later removed from his live site; its text survives in a Wayback Machine archive.
What changed between the book and the Season 2 premiere?
In Fire & Blood, Aegon and Helaena have three children: twins Jaehaerys and Jaehaera, and their younger son Maelor. During Blood and Cheese, the intruders force Helaena to choose which son will die. She names Maelor, but they kill Jaehaerys instead. Martin also notes that Helaena offers her own life in the book scene.

In the Season 2 premiere, Maelor is absent. Helaena is instead asked to identify the boy among the twins, offers a necklace, and Jaehaerys is killed. The central change is not only the missing child: the show changes the mechanics of Helaena’s choice and the way the intruders present it.

Why did Martin object to Maelor’s omission?
Martin argued that the book’s forced choice made the scene more harrowing and gave Helaena a more pronounced act of sacrifice. He was also concerned about consequences beyond the sequence itself: in his reading, removing Maelor could eliminate the Bitterbridge events, weaken the motivation for Helaena’s suicide, and change the unrest that follows in the book.
He framed the issue as a chain reaction rather than a complaint about one missing character: “Change begets change, and even small and seemingly insignificant alterations to a timeline — or a story — can have a profound effect on all that follows.” — George R.R. Martin, “Beware the Butterflies,” September 4, 2024.

That was Martin’s assessment of where the adaptation might lead, not confirmation of what the television series would do in later episodes. The archived post explains his concern; it does not establish that the show would reproduce every later book event or that the predicted consequences would occur on screen.
Why did the show leave Maelor out?
Martin wrote that he initially objected, but did not press the matter after showrunner Ryan Condal told him Maelor was being postponed, with a possible birth in Season 3. Condal also cited the practical difficulty and cost of casting a toddler. Martin later said the plan had changed: Maelor would be omitted entirely.

Condal’s reported explanation adds the broader adaptation problem. The book’s story spans roughly 30 years, while the show compresses it to roughly 20. In a TVLine interview, Condal said the shorter chronology affected children’s ages and casting decisions; the production wanted to avoid repeatedly recasting the whole cast. The Washington Post also reported his comments on HBO’s official podcast.
HBO defended adaptation choices as necessary to the format and limitations of screen storytelling, while saying the creative team respected Martin’s work, according to Variety’s report on the response. The accounts describe different parts of the decision: Martin’s understanding that Maelor might be postponed, and the production’s reasons for compressing and adapting the story.

Did Martin criticize all of Season 2?
No. In a July 5, 2024 post, Martin praised the first two episodes of Season 2 and the addition of a dog character. He said he would write separately about Blood and Cheese and “Maelor the Missing.” That earlier praise is preserved in his July post; his later criticism focused on the Maelor change and its possible effects.
