What happened to George Winston?
Winston died in California on June 4, 2023, at age 73, according to his official website and Georgia Public Broadcasting’s obituary. The official account says he had faced cancer for ten years. Winston’s official biography also reports that he received a bone-marrow transplant in 2013 for myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS) at City of Hope, which extended his life by ten years.
According to that biography, he continued writing and recording during treatment and performed live while raising money for Feeding America and local food banks. Georgia Public Broadcasting independently reported his death date and age in its June 7, 2023 obituary.
How George Winston described his music
Winston called his melodic solo-piano style “folk piano.” His compositions drew on American landscapes, regions and seasons, including associations with Montana, Mississippi and Florida. Georgia Public Broadcasting also situated him among the early stars of new age music, a label commonly used to describe his place in the genre; “folk piano” was Winston’s own term for his approach.
