George R. R. Martin’s August 30, 2024, post only promised a future critique of House of the Dragon. He delivered it on September 4 in “Beware the Butterflies,” arguing that the show’s omission of Maelor changed the emotional force of the Blood and Cheese scene and could disrupt the story’s later cause and effect. The detailed post has since been deleted from Martin’s site; an archived copy preserves it.
What did Martin mean by “everything that’s gone wrong”?
The phrase came from the end of Martin’s August 30, 2024, official blog post, which was mainly about his difficult year, travel, illness and Santa Fe’s Burning of Zozobra. He wrote: “I do not look forward to other posts I need to write, about everything that’s gone wrong with HOUSE OF THE DRAGON… but I need to do that too, and I will.” The post was a teaser, not a list of complaints. On September 4, he published “Beware the Butterflies,” a focused critique of adaptation choices, especially the removal of Maelor and the altered Blood and Cheese sequence. Read the archived September 4 post.
Why did Maelor matter to the Blood and Cheese storyline?
In Fire & Blood, Aegon and Helaena have three children, including two-year-old Maelor. In Martin’s account of the book scene, Helaena is forced to choose which son will die. She names Maelor, trying to save the twins, but the killers kill Jaehaerys instead.

The show’s version, as Martin described it, has no Maelor. Helaena identifies the boy and offers a necklace before Jaehaerys is killed. Martin thought the missing “Helaena’s Choice” beat weakened the scene because it removed a particularly cruel dilemma. He also recognized that viewers responded differently: he said book readers often found the scene underwhelming, while viewers unfamiliar with the book found it harrowing. That was his observation, not a measured audience survey.
His criticism was not an unqualified rejection of the episode. Martin said he had praised the first two episodes of season two, understood both kinds of reaction to Blood and Cheese, and still loved the episode overall.
What downstream changes did Martin fear?
Martin said showrunner Ryan Condal had initially described Maelor’s absence as a postponement, citing practical concerns such as casting a toddler, the production pace and budget. Martin wrote that he accepted the explanation at first. His objection sharpened when he understood Maelor’s birth had become a permanent omission.
He argued that Maelor’s role in the source narrative connected several later events. Without him, Martin believed, the adaptation might remove or weaken:

- HOTD S1 DVD
- The Bitterbridge sequence.
- Helaena’s motivation for suicide.
- The unrest in King’s Landing.
These were Martin’s concerns about how the book’s story fit together and what he understood of the show’s plans at the time. They do not establish what later seasons would do, or prove that the series could not tell a coherent story with different choices. His broader point was captured in the post: “Change begets change, and even small and seemingly insignificant alterations to a timeline — or a story — can have a profound effect on all that follows.”
How did the showrunner and HBO explain the changes?
Condal’s production rationale addressed a different question from Martin’s narrative critique: how to make the story work for television within the production’s constraints. As reported from HBO’s official podcast, Condal said the show compressed the timeline and wanted to avoid repeatedly recasting young characters. He described the choice as a compromise and said the team treated the ripple effect as a strength. In contemporaneous reporting, he said, “We had to make some compromises in rendering that story so that we didn’t have to recast the whole cast multiple times and really, just frankly, lose people.” The Washington Post’s September 2024 report provides additional context.
HBO also defended the adaptation’s creative choices in a statement to Variety: “Commonly, when adapting a book for the screen, with its own format and limitations, the showrunner ultimately is required to make difficult choices about the characters and stories the audience will follow.” Variety’s September 5, 2024, report covers Martin’s criticism and HBO’s response.
The positions are not mutually exclusive: Condal and HBO explained why the production made its choices; Martin argued that those choices changed what the source story’s events meant and how they led into later events.

What did Martin say about seasons 3 and 4?
Martin ended “Beware the Butterflies” with a warning: “And there are larger and more toxic butterflies to come, if HOUSE OF THE DRAGON goes ahead with some of the changes being contemplated for seasons 3 and 4…” The qualification matters: he was discussing changes he said were under consideration then, not confirming what the series ultimately would show.
In January 2026, TVLine summarized a Hollywood Reporter interview in which Martin described his relationship with Condal as having deteriorated and called it “abysmal.” That later characterization belongs to the later interview, not to the August 2024 teaser. TVLine’s January 2026 account reports the remark.
