The deluxe edition is an album release, not a special edition of the documentary.
What Olivia Harrison said about the album reissue
In the 2024 announcement of the album’s 50th-anniversary reissue, Olivia Harrison said: “I hope you revisit Living in the Material World or discover it for the first time, and as you listen, share George’s wish for himself and mankind: ‘Give me Love, give me peace on Earth,’” The report said she co-produced the reissue project with her son Dhani Harrison. Ultimate Classic Rock’s 2024 report tied her remarks directly to the album edition.
What the 50th-anniversary deluxe editions include
The album was originally released on May 30, 1973. The anniversary reissue was announced in September 2024 for release on November 15, 2024. The reported editions ranged from single-disc versions to deluxe sets; the super deluxe configuration had the most extras.
| Configuration | Reported contents |
|---|---|
| Single-disc editions | Single-disc versions were among the announced formats; the report did not specify their contents beyond the album. |
| 2CD deluxe | Two CDs; the report described deluxe CD formats but did not separately itemize the 2CD edition’s contents. |
| 2LP deluxe | Two LPs; the report described deluxe vinyl formats but did not separately itemize the 2LP edition’s contents. |
| Limited super deluxe | Two CDs, two LPs, a Blu-ray with a new Dolby Atmos mix, 12 previously unreleased recordings, a 60-page booklet, archive artwork, and a seven-inch single of “Sunshine Life for Me (Sail Away Raymond)” featuring Ringo Starr and members of The Band. |
These are the formats and contents described in the 2024 announcement, not a ranking of sound quality or a guarantee of current stock. The bonus recordings listed in that report were:

How the album fits George Harrison’s work
Living in the Material World followed All Things Must Pass. A 2023 retrospective by Ultimate Classic Rock characterizes the later album as more ruminative and questioning, with songs engaging with fame and faith. It reports that most of the material was written in 1971–72, with “Try Some, Buy Some” the exception.

The same retrospective reports that the album reached No. 1 in the United States and No. 2 in the United Kingdom. Those are chart positions, not measures of present-day sales. It also says Harrison assigned copyrights for nine of the album’s 11 main-track songs, as well as the non-album B-side “Miss O’Dell,” to the Material World Charitable Foundation.
How the 2011 documentary differs
Scorsese’s George Harrison: Living in the Material World is a separate, two-part made-for-television documentary—not a deluxe version of the 1973 album. At the film’s 2011 New York Film Festival premiere, Olivia Harrison, a producer on the documentary, told CBS News: “Marty has found the essence of George.” She also said, “I don’t think anyone really knew much about George, prior to this documentary.” Scorsese praised Harrison’s engagement with Eastern culture and spirituality in the 1960s. CBS News’ 2011 interview places those remarks in the film context.

A 2011 Guardian preview described the documentary’s use of previously unseen letters, home-movie footage, and personal recollections. It also reported that Olivia reflected on the challenges in their marriage and their shared interest in meditation. Those memories belong to the documentary-era coverage, not the 2024 album announcement. The preview gave October 10, 2011 as a scheduled DVD/Blu-ray release date; that historical date is not evidence of current availability.
