George Clooney dyed his usually gray hair dark to play journalist Edward R. Murrow in the Broadway adaptation of Good Night and Good Luck. The change surprised viewers, and Clooney said it made him less recognizable on New York streets—but “unrecognizable” describes a reported impression, not a finding about all fans.
Why did George Clooney dye his hair?
The dark hair was part of Clooney’s transformation for his Broadway portrayal of Edward R. Murrow, the CBS journalist at the center of Good Night and Good Luck. In a February 2025 interview with The Irish Times, he said he would cover his salt-and-pepper hair with black dye.
He joked that his wife would dislike it, saying, “My wife is going to hate it because nothing makes you look older than when an older guy dyes his hair.” He also predicted, “My kids are going to just laugh at me nonstop.” Those were his expectations before audiences saw the new look.
What did Clooney say about the new look?
Viewers noticed Clooney’s dark hair during a CNN interview with Jake Tapper on April 16, 2025. As reported by The Independent, Clooney called it “horrible” and said, “The only good news is that I can walk in the streets of New York and nobody recognises me. It’s the craziest thing.” His comment is the clearest explanation for why the change could make him seem unfamiliar: fans were accustomed to his gray or salt-and-pepper hair.

In comments to CBS Mornings quoted by CBS News on April 21, he said, “I know it’s not good” and “You never get used to it.” The outlet reported that the dark hair was not his favorite and that he said Amal found it funny and the twins laughed.
How did his family react?
The reported reactions differ by timing. Before the Broadway role’s public appearances, Clooney told The Irish Times he expected Amal to hate the dye and his children to laugh. In the later CBS News account, he described his wife as finding the look funny and said the twins laughed. These are his reported comments at different points, not one single prediction or reaction.

Is the dark hair still his current look?
The Broadway transformation should not be treated as confirmation of Clooney’s present appearance. In its September 3, 2026 coverage of his Venice Film Festival appearance, GQ described him as looking “exactly like himself.” That description applies to the event GQ covered, not necessarily to every later date.
