George Clooney said he believed Democrats made a mistake by nominating Kamala Harris after Joe Biden withdrew from the 2024 presidential race. In a CBS News Sunday Morning interview with Seth Doane, he argued that Democrats should have held a primary and said Harris had to run against her own record. That was Clooney’s assessment of the choice—not proof that a different process would have changed the election result.
What Clooney said about Harris’s nomination
Asked about the decision to replace Biden with Harris, Clooney said, “I think the mistake with it being Kamala is she had to run against her own record.” He explained that it was difficult for Harris to present herself as a break from the administration when she had been part of it. He concluded: “I think it was a mistake, quite honestly.”
Clooney said he had wanted Democrats to choose Biden’s replacement through a primary. “We had a chance,” he said, adding: “Let’s battle-test this quickly and get it up and going.” His argument was that a contest could test candidates and give Democrats a chance to select a nominee rather than move directly to Harris.
Why Clooney’s criticism is also about process
Biden withdrew from the race and endorsed Harris. The party then nominated her through a virtual vote of delegates, as reported by The Guardian. Clooney’s preferred alternative was a primary: a process in which candidates would compete for support before delegates settled on a nominee.

His explanation linked that process to the challenge he believed Harris faced. Because she had served as vice president, Clooney argued, she could not easily campaign as though she were separate from the Biden administration. He did not establish that a primary would have produced a stronger nominee, or that another nominee would have won.
How Clooney’s position changed after Biden withdrew
In July 2024, Clooney published a New York Times essay titled “I Love Joe Biden. But We Need a New Nominee,” arguing that Biden would not win after his debate performance and urging Democrats to choose someone else. The essay preceded Biden’s withdrawal.

After Biden endorsed Harris, Clooney praised his decision as selfless and said he was excited to support her, according to TIME. In the 2025 interview, he said he had no regrets about urging Biden to step aside, while criticizing the subsequent choice and process. Those positions are distinct: he supported Biden’s withdrawal, endorsed Harris at the time, and later said he believed Democrats should have held a primary.
