Spoilers for Gin Ichimaru’s later confrontation with Aizen and Ichigo. Gin’s Zanpakutō is Shinsō. Its Shikai visibly attacks by extending at high speed; his Bankai, Kamishini no Yari, magnifies that idea but hides a more dangerous trick: for an instant, the blade becomes dust-like, allowing a fragment to remain in a target and release a cell-destroying poison.
What is Gin Ichimaru’s Shikai?
Gin’s Zanpakutō is called Shinsō. When released, its blade extends rapidly, letting him thrust or cut across a distance that would ordinarily be beyond a short sword’s reach. The extension also carries force: it is not simply a way to touch a faraway opponent, but a sudden, forceful attack that can strike before the target has time to react.
The Shikai release command is often rendered in English as “Shoot to kill.” Wording can vary by translation, so treat that phrase as edition-specific rather than a universal English line. For an exact quotation, check the English edition you are reading.
What does Gin’s Bankai, Kamishini no Yari, do?
Gin calls his Bankai Kamishini no Yari. It keeps the apparent extension-and-retraction action of Shinsō, but raises its scale and speed dramatically. At first, the ability seems to be about the blade’s extraordinary reach: Gin makes the distance it can cross sound like its defining advantage.

Spoilers for the Bankai reveal: the more important detail is what happens during the blade’s brief transformation as it extends and retracts. Gin explains that it becomes dust-like for an instant. A fragment can be left inside a target, where it releases poison that breaks down cells. That concealed fragment—not length alone—is the central lethal feature of the Bankai.
Are the 13-kilometer and 500-times-speed-of-sound figures literal?
These are figures Gin states in the story about Kamishini no Yari’s length and speed. They are in-universe claims, not real-world measurements or independently established scientific statistics. They help sell the Bankai’s apparent scale, but they do not explain its hidden mechanism: the dust-like state and the poisonous fragment.

Exact dialogue and wording depend on the translation. The figures should be checked against the licensed manga edition before being quoted as Gin’s precise words; they should not be treated as measured performance data or used to infer additional calculations.

Where to read the confrontation
VIZ lists Bleach, Vol. 46 by Tite Kubo, whose catalog synopsis places Gin in the conflict with Aizen. The manga is the best reference for the scene and for checking the wording in a particular licensed English edition. VIZ’s Volume 47 listing describes the story continuing as Aizen and Gin head toward the real Karakura Town.
