Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteGiorgio Armani’s most influential designs share a clear idea: clothes can look authoritative without feeling rigid. His mid-1970s unstructured jacket loosened men’s tailoring; women’s suits carried that ease into the language of 1980s power dressing; and later collections continued to explore fluidity, restraint and ornament. These selections trace that evolution rather than claim an objective ranking of his best work.
The unstructured jacket: Armani’s defining design idea
The strongest through-line in Armani’s work is the relaxed jacket. The Metropolitan Museum of Art describes Armani as creating his now-iconic men’s unstructured jacket in the mid-1970s, when menswear was commonly rigidly padded and shaped. Instead of relying on that firm internal architecture, the jacket softened the outline and made ease part of its authority. The Met’s account of a 1979 ensemble also notes the development of Armani’s relaxed tailoring and use of lightweight fabrics over the following years. The Met’s ensemble record
That distinction matters: Armani’s achievement here is not a claim to have invented all soft tailoring. It is the way his designs made a less rigid, lighter approach to the jacket recognizable as an Armani signature. His Spring/Summer 1979 ensemble, published in Vogue that year, helped establish the Armani suit as an international reference, according to the Giorgio Armani Archivio.
The 1980s women’s suit: power without hard armor
Armani’s women’s tailoring carried the relaxed construction into a silhouette associated with authority. The official archive presents a tailored jacket-and-skirt look as marking the beginning of its 1980s power-dressing revolution. The result was not simply traditional men’s tailoring copied onto women: the significance lies in the balance between a composed, assertive outline and softer construction.

The Guggenheim Museum Bilbao places men’s and women’s power suits within the international economic boom of the 1980s, describing them as emblematic of the era. That museum framing helps explain why Armani’s suit became more than a garment category: it gave a widely visible form to changing ideas of professional presence. It should not, however, be taken to mean that one designer or one suit alone defined women’s workwear. Armani/Archivio · Guggenheim Bilbao
American Gigolo and the screen life of Armani tailoring
Film helped make Armani’s understated look legible beyond fashion audiences. The Victoria and Albert Museum points to Richard Gere’s wardrobe in American Gigolo (1980) as a prominent expression of the designer’s unstructured tailoring, soft palette and restrained style. On screen, those choices made the suit’s relaxed polish visible as movement and presence, not just as a runway silhouette. The V&A’s selection of iconic Armani looks

A later film offers a more direct glimpse of the construction. The Met refers to Martin Scorsese’s Made in Milan (1990), in which Armani demonstrated the jacket with its lining removed. Together, the examples show two routes by which the design idea traveled: a wardrobe worn by a film character, and a documentary view of the garment’s making.
Beyond the 1980s: suits that continue the conversation
Armani’s design history does not stop with the power suit. Museum collections document a Spring/Summer 1994 men’s suit at the V&A and a 1994 trouser suit at Spain’s Museo del Traje. These dated examples ground the story in garments from the next decade, rather than treating the 1980s as the whole of Armani’s contribution. V&A · Museo del Traje

The official archive highlights a Fall/Winter 1990 design through the ideas of deconstruction and fluidity. It is a useful counterpoint to the sharply legible suit: Armani’s recurring interest was not simply in making tailoring softer, but in letting garments move between structure and looseness. The archive also points to influences ranging from Japanese aesthetics to theatrical and historical references, evidence of a broader design vocabulary than the pared-back suit alone suggests. Retrospectives make the range easier to see. The Associated Press reported that a 2025 exhibition at Milan’s Pinacoteca di Brera included 129 Armani looks spanning the 1980s to the present day. That is the exhibition’s count, not a tally of all the designs Armani made. Associated Press report

Armani/Silos presents creations through recurring themes across almost fifty years of fashion. Its digital archive page gives figures of approximately 1,000 outfits and 2,000 garments and accessories; those are figures on the current page, not a dated census. The breadth of such displays helps put the signature jacket in context alongside more decorative, theatrical and fluid work. Armani/Silos permanent exhibition · Armani/Silos digital archive
The official archive describes its purpose this way: “An archive does not only preserve garments: it preserves gestures.” This is institutional wording from the archive page, not a quotation attributed to Armani personally. Giorgio Armani Archivio
