Gillberg was Duane Gill, a WWE wrestler whose bald head, black tights, growl, entrance drumming and crowd chants echoed Goldberg’s WCW presentation—only to turn its intimidating force into a joke. The parody became more than a one-note gag: Gill won WWE’s Light Heavyweight Championship the night after his 1998 Survivor Series debut and held it for more than 15 months, according to WWE.
Who was Gillberg?
Gillberg was the wrestling persona of Duane Gill. WWE describes the character as its playful poke at Goldberg during the Monday Night War with WCW. The joke worked because the audience could recognize the original: Goldberg was presented as a physically imposing, near-unstoppable force, while Gillberg copied the signals of that presentation and made them deliberately ridiculous.
Goldberg debuted in WCW in September 1997. WWE’s 2018 Hall of Fame announcement credited him with a 173-match undefeated streak and pointed to the elements that defined his presentation: roaring crowds, fireworks, the Spear and the Jackhammer. The statistic is WWE’s reported figure; match-counting conventions can differ.
How the parody turned Goldberg’s intensity into comedy
Gillberg borrowed familiar visual and sound cues—bald head, black tights, a growl, entrance drumming, chants and pyrotechnics. The contrast supplied the punchline: instead of matching Goldberg’s imposing scale and explosive menace, Gillberg was slight and comic, with fumbling that punctured the aura he was imitating.

The contrast was part of the performance, not a claim that the two wrestlers were equivalent. Goldberg’s character was booked around an undefeated aura; Gillberg’s comedy depended on the audience seeing the gap between that aura and its intentionally deflating copy.
Gill later described the audience’s response to his first appearance as an honor. “When I came through the curtain, everybody was standing there, crying their eyes out with laughter and clapping,” he recalled in WWE’s retrospective. “It was the highest honor I ever got.”

Gillberg’s joke led to a real championship run
Gill’s route to the character began with an unexpected opportunity. At Survivor Series in November 1998, he appeared as Mankind’s mystery opponent in the tournament for the vacant WWE Championship. Gill lost, but WWE’s 2010 retrospective says his enthusiastic performance helped him earn a three-year WWE contract.
The following night on Raw, Gill defeated Christian to win the Light Heavyweight Championship. WWE says the reign lasted more than 15 months, and its Gillberg profile calls him the longest-reigning WWE Light Heavyweight Champion ever. Gill later recalled the surprise of the moment: “I was crying my eyes out,” he told WWE. “Here I am, a carpenter for the board of education and now I’m Light Heavyweight Champion of WWE. I was dying, man.”

What happened when Gillberg met Goldberg?
The on-screen meeting came in April 2003, after Goldberg had joined WWE. On Raw, The Rock brought Gillberg out to needle Goldberg with the parody. WWE’s retrospective describes Goldberg manhandling Gillberg in the segment.
Gill also recalled a tense backstage exchange. In WWE’s 2010 account, he said Goldberg warned, “He told me I had a [butt] whooping coming,” and remembered Goldberg lifting him “literally off the floor by my neck with one hand.” Those details are Gill’s recollection as published by WWE; they should not be treated as independently verified backstage reporting.

Gillberg’s later WWE appearances
The character returned for occasional appearances after the 2003 segment. WWE records Gillberg as the first wrestler eliminated from Raw’s 15th-anniversary battle royal in 2007. In 2017, he appeared during Chris Jericho’s Festival of Friendship before Kevin Owens attacked him.
WWE reported in 2010 that Gill’s Pro Wrestling Academy opened in Severn, Maryland, in July of that year, with Gill as owner and head trainer at the time. That report establishes the academy’s opening and his role then, not its present status.
