Green Day opened the 2024 Clive Davis Pre-Grammy Gala with “American Idiot” and “Basket Case”; Ice Spice performed “Deli”; and Jelly Roll sang “Need a Favor” before joining Lainey Wilson for “Save Me.” Serena Williams introduced Green Day at the invitation-only event, held February 3 at the Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills, the night before the 66th Grammy Awards.

Serena Williams introduced Green Day. “Truly, to know me is to know my love for them,” she said in her opening remarks, according to WTA. The band began the entertainment with “American Idiot” and “Basket Case.” Before the set, Billie Joe Armstrong urged the audience: “Don’t cheer — vote!” as reported by the Los Angeles Times.

Who was honored at the 2024 gala?
Jon Platt, then chairman and CEO of Sony Music Publishing, received the Recording Academy’s Grammy Salute to Industry Icons Award. Accepting the honor, Platt said, “No one does it alone,” the Associated Press reported.
How the performances fit into the wider evening
The program moved across pop, rock, country, hip-hop and legacy acts. Mark Ronson and Andrew Wyatt performed “I’m Just Ken” with Lainey Wilson; Noah Kahan sang “Stick Season” and “Dial Drunk”; and Victoria Monét performed “On My Mama.” Josh Groban paid tribute to Stephen Sondheim and later sang “Bridge Over Troubled Water” with Michael Trotter Jr. of the War and Treaty. Public Enemy performed “Fight the Power,” and the Isley Brothers played “Shout,” according to the Los Angeles Times.

A closing stretch of veteran performers
The event continued past 1 a.m., according to the Associated Press. Gladys Knight, Dionne Warwick and Stevie Wonder closed the night: Knight sang “The Way We Were / Try to Remember,” Warwick joined her for “That’s What Friends Are For,” and Wonder finished the number on harmonica.

Davis began the party in 1976 to celebrate Barry Manilow’s “Mandy,” which became Arista Records’ first Grammy Record of the Year nominee, the Associated Press reported. Davis described the event’s purpose at the 2024 gathering this way: “We concentrate on the pure celebration of music.”
